Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Mary | Trani

Romanesque cathedral on Trani's seafront, with a crypt linked to St Nicholas the Pilgrim and a bell tower climb with views over the sea and the castle.

Trani Cathedral stands a few steps from the sea in Trani, a port town in Apulia. Built in the Romanesque style from pale local limestone, it was consecrated in 1143, and its walls take on a warm honey colour as the light changes. Entry to the basilica is free. The crypt holds relics linked to St Nicholas the Pilgrim, and a climb up the bell tower gives views over the town, the castle and the sea.

Stone, age and the church's origins

Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Mary | Trani

The cathedral was built in the Romanesque style from local white and pink limestone, quarried from nearby caves. It is the same pale stone the town uses for its buildings, and it is the main reason the walls glow in the afternoon light. The church was consecrated in 1143. It stands on the site of an earlier church, Santa Maria della Scala, which is said to date back to the 4th century.

The cathedral is dedicated to St Nicholas the Pilgrim, who died nearby while on foot to Rome. The basilica remains one of the most popular attractions in Trani.

Inside the church

The nave has little decoration. Plain stone walls and simple arches carry the space, and the effect is calm rather than showy. If the building is quiet, sit for a few minutes and let the silence settle. The interior is cool, which is normal for buildings of this age and type.

Guides are not allowed inside, so the visit is self-guided. The liturgy is normally held around 10 pm.

The crypt and the bell tower

The entrance to the basilica is from the underground level, where the crypt is. The crypt has frescoes, but the lights that show them must be switched on for a fee.

From the square, the bell tower and the rose window dominate the skyline. The tower is 59 m tall and has about 298 steps. The climb costs €5. You cannot step outside at the top, and the nets fitted across the windows make photos difficult. From the top, you can see the whole castle, the port and the sea.
