Bari is the regional capital of Puglia, on the Adriatic coast at the heel of Italy's boot. Its old town, Bari Vecchia, is a dense grid of narrow streets where women make orecchiette by hand, often on their doorsteps. The Basilica of St Nicholas, in the old town, holds relics of the saint. The port also runs ferries across the Adriatic, so Bari works as a departure point as well as a destination.

Alberobello's trulli, the cliffs at Polignano a Mare and the cave dwellings of Matera are all day trips from Bari by train or bus, so you choose between basing yourself in the city and using it as a gateway. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months for walking the old town; summer is hot. Plan at least two nights to see the old town and the basilica without rushing, and add nights if you want more time in the towns.

Bari in five

  1. Walk Bari Vecchia in the morningThe old town's lanes are quietest early, when women make orecchiette in doorways on the street known for it. The Basilica of St Nicholas and the Swabian castle are close enough to see in a half day.
  2. Take the airport rail linkThe airport is close to the city, with a short rail link to Bari Centrale. Check the operator's page for times, and keep the ticket for the platform gate.Italy by train off-peak
  3. Use Bari for FSE and regional day tripsFSE trains run to Alberobello and the Itria Valley, and regional trains reach Polignano a Mare. A car widens the choice, but is not required for the first two.Alberobello
  4. Plan ferries and EES on the same pageFerries from Albania and Greece arrive at an external Schengen border, so allow time and carry passports. Ask the operator about check-in and any extra documents.EES, explained
