Sorrento Peninsula

The Sorrento Peninsula is worth the trip for lemon terraces, fishing villages and cliff paths above the water.

The Sorrento Peninsula is the long strip of land in Campania that separates the Bay of Naples from the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento, on its northern edge, is the largest base and the simplest to reach, with trains from Naples arriving in the town. Past Sorrento, the peninsula narrows into villages built on hillsides above small harbors, with lemon groves on terraces. From many points on the north shore, Capri is visible across the water.

The peninsula suits travelers who want to walk, swim and eat without a packed schedule. Cliff paths connect the villages, and the tip at Punta Campanella sits inside a protected marine area, reached on foot or by boat. Buses link the main villages, but the roads are narrow and slow in summer. Spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons for walking, while summer brings heavier boat and bus traffic. Plan at least three nights to see more than one village and reach the point without rushing.

Sorrento Peninsula in five

  1. Base in a village for calmer eveningsMassa Lubrense, Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi and Vico Equense cost less than Sorrento and keep a local rhythm. You trade nightlife for quiet and need buses or a car.Massa Lubrense
  2. Walk to Punta Campanella and the covesMarked trails run along the tip of the peninsula, with views of Capri. Check the marine protected area's official page for rules on access and swimming before you set out.
  3. Eat at Marina del Cantone and NeranoThe zucchini pasta named for Nerano is the local dish. Book lunch ahead in summer, and arrive by bus or on foot rather than driving into the harbor.Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi
  4. Use the bus or a car, not the train aloneThe Circumvesuviana serves Vico Equense, Meta and Sorrento on the north shore only. The south shore and tip are reached by local bus, taxi or car.Sorrento
  5. Avoid the coast road in peak summerThe road to Positano and the tip is slow on summer weekends and in July and August. Start early, or choose a boat to skip the traffic.

Sorrento Peninsula FAQ

What is the Sorrento Peninsula known for?

Lemon groves, sea cliffs, fishing villages and the walk to Punta Campanella, plus easy access to Capri. It sits between the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast.

Is the Sorrento Peninsula better than the Amalfi Coast?

It is quieter and cheaper in the villages, with fewer crowds on the roads. The Amalfi Coast has more famous towns, so many visitors split a stay between the two.

Do you need a car on the Sorrento Peninsula?

Not for Sorrento and Vico Equense, which have trains and buses. For small villages, coves and trailheads a car or taxi makes the trip simpler, though parking is tight in summer.

How many days do you need on the Sorrento Peninsula?

A day trip covers Sorrento and one village. Three or four nights let you walk to Punta Campanella, eat at Nerano and take a boat to Capri.

What is the best base on the peninsula?

Sorrento for transport and day trips, Massa Lubrense or Sant'Agata for quiet. Pick by whether you will use trains or a car.
