Capri is an island in the Gulf of Naples, in Campania, southern Italy. It has two administrative areas: Capri, which covers the centre and east, and Anacapri, which covers the west. Ferries and hydrofoils run from Naples, Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi to Marina Grande, the island's main port. The funicular climbs from the port to the town above, and the Scala Fenicia, a long, steep stone staircase, links the port with Anacapri. The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, on the mainland, and travellers then continue by ferry or hydrofoil.
The highlights are the Faraglioni, three rock stacks off the south-east coast best viewed from the Giardini di Augusto, and the Blue Grotto, a sea cave that has drawn travellers since the 19th century. Roman ruins survive at Villa Jovis and Palazzo a Mare. The climate is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, dry summers, so late spring and early autumn are pleasant times to visit. A day trip covers the main sights. Stay overnight if you want a slower pace.
Capri in five
- Decide: day trip or one nightA day trip covers the Piazzetta, a boat loop and one walk if you catch an early sailing. One night puts you on the island after the last boats leave, when the lanes empty and prices of the best tables ease.Capri day trip
- Take the ferry or hydrofoil to Marina GrandeBoats leave from Naples (Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa) and Sorrento, with seasonal sailings from the Amalfi Coast. Check the operator's timetable the night before, since rough seas cancel runs.
- Do not count on the Blue GrottoThe cave closes in rough seas or high wind, and entry is paid at the cave from a small rowboat, so a boat tour can include a stop and still end without a visit. Check sea conditions that morning and keep a backup plan.
- Skip the car, use funicular and busesA funicular links Marina Grande to Capri town, and buses run to Anacapri. Roads are narrow and parking is scarce, so a rental car adds nothing; check the island's current vehicle rules before you try.Where to stay on Capri
- Walk to the viewpoints before 10amThe Gardens of Augustus and the walk to Villa Jovis are best before the day boats land. Some cliff paths close after rockfall, so ask at the tourist office which are open.

Capri FAQ
Is Capri worth visiting?
Yes for the scenery, the viewpoints and a day of walking, but not if you hate crowds. In July and August the Piazzetta and the boat queues are heavy. Spring and September are far calmer.
Can you visit Capri as a day trip from Naples?
Yes. A hydrofoil takes about 50 minutes, so leave Naples before 9am and you get roughly six hours on the island. That covers Capri town, a walk and a boat loop, but not Anacapri as well unless you move fast.
Is the Blue Grotto worth it?
Only on a calm day with a short queue. The cave closes in rough seas, you pay again at the mouth, and the visit lasts a few minutes. A boat tour around the island is a more reliable highlight.
Is Capri expensive?
Yes, it is among the priciest places in Italy, especially on the Piazzetta and in Capri town. Save by staying in Anacapri or Marina Grande, eating away from the main square and taking a picnic.
How many days do you need in Capri?
One day for the highlights, two nights if you want walking, a quiet evening and no ferry rush. A third night suits slow stays only; the island is small.
