The Amalfi Coast lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Province of Salerno, Campania, in southern Italy. It follows the southern side of the Sorrentine Peninsula, with Vietri sul Mare at its eastern end and Positano at its western end. The name comes from Amalfi, the town that long served as the coast's main hub. Thirteen municipalities line the shore, and UNESCO has recognized the coast as a World Heritage Site since 1997.
The draw is towns stacked on steep slopes and lemon terraces climbing up from the sea. Amalfi has its cathedral and the Paradise cloister, Positano has its historic centre and the Church of the Assunta, and Ravello is known as the city of music. Limoncello is made from local sfusato amalfitano lemons. Plan several nights, because the Amalfi Drive (SS163), about 40 km long, is the only road route to the coast and buses share its narrow lanes. Late spring and early autumn are the best months, while July and August are hot and crowded.
Amalfi Coast in five
- Plan the SS163 Amalfi Drive around the busesThe SS163, locally the Amalfi Drive, runs about 40 km and is the coast's only road route, joining Vietri sul Mare to Positano. Buses use the same narrow road, so allow extra time for every road journey.Getting around
- Book boat trips from Positano or AmalfiBoat trips leave from Positano and Amalfi and show the steep shoreline from the water. Book the day you want before you arrive, especially in summer.Tours and tickets
- Pick Naples or Salerno for your flightNaples International Airport (Napoli-Capodichino) is the main international gateway to the area, while Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport is nearest the coast. Compare transfer times from each before you book.Getting around
- Try colatura di alici in CetaraCetara is known for colatura di alici, a fish sauce made from anchovies. Taste a small amount on its own first, since it is strong and salty.
- Go up to Ravello for the gardensRavello sits in the hills above the coast, so plan a bus or taxi up. Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo are the main sights.

Read the guideAmalfi Coast FAQ
Is the Amalfi Coast worth visiting?
Yes, for hill towns, sea views and boat trips along a steep shore. July and August are hot and crowded, and the towns and roads are narrow.
How do you get around the Amalfi Coast?
Buses and ferries run along the coast, and boat excursions leave from Positano and Amalfi. The SS163 is the only road route, and it is narrow.
How many days do you need on the Amalfi Coast?
Three or four nights gives time for two or three towns and a boat trip. One day covers a single town, but road journeys take longer than the distance suggests.
When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
Late spring and early autumn are the best months. July and August are hot and crowded.
Where should I stay on the Amalfi Coast?
Positano suits the historic centre and boat trips, Amalfi suits buses and the Duomo, and Ravello suits a stay in the hills near its villas and the Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer.
