Massa Lubrense is a town on the western tip of the Sorrento peninsula, in the Campania region of southern Italy. Its coast is cut into cliffs, small bays and harbors. The villages of Nerano, Marina del Cantone and Termini sit on the sea, and Punta Campanella, at the tip, faces Capri across the water. It is a protected marine area with walking paths.
Come for coastal walks, swims from rocky coves and seafood at waterside restaurants. Nerano is linked to zucchini alla Nerano, a pasta dish. Local SITA buses connect the villages to Sorrento, and a day trip reaches Capri or Naples. Pick a base by what you want: Nerano for a quieter village by the sea, Marina del Cantone for a small harbor close to the paths, or the town center for shops and bus stops. Two or three nights fit a slow trip with time for one long walk. Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable months for walking and swimming.
Massa Lubrense in five
- Pick a village, not just the municipalityMassa Lubrense is a string of hamlets, not one town. Sant'Agata has the views, Marina della Lobra the harbor and Nerano the beach and seafood, and they are not walkable from each other.
- Walk out to Punta CampanellaThe peninsula ends in a marine protected area with trails and views across to Capri. Check the area's official site for access rules and any limits on boats or swimming before you go.
- Take the boat to Capri, not the carCapri is a short crossing from the peninsula in season, and services change by month. Check which harbor your operator uses and book the return leg first.Capri travel guide
- Plan around narrow roadsLanes are tight and summer parking is scarce, so a car helps for coves but is not relaxing. Local buses link the villages to Sorrento; check the last run before a late dinner.
- Arrive through Naples by railThe Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento takes about an hour, then a local bus or taxi finishes the trip. Pair the peninsula with a night in the city first.Naples travel guide

Where is Massa Lubrense?
It is the municipality at the western tip of the Sorrento peninsula, south of Sorrento town and facing Capri. It includes Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi, Marina della Lobra and Nerano, and has no train station of its own.
Is Massa Lubrense better than Sorrento?
It is calmer and more rural, with sea views and coves, but you give up Sorrento's train station and wider choice of restaurants. Choose Massa Lubrense for quiet and walking, and Sorrento if you plan several day trips by rail.
How do I get from Naples to Massa Lubrense?
Take the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, about an hour, then a local bus or taxi to your village. Ferries from Naples to Sorrento also run in season; check operators for current timetables.
Do I need a car in Massa Lubrense?
Not essential, because buses connect the main villages with Sorrento, but timetables thin out in the evening. A car reaches coves and viewpoints more easily, though narrow roads and summer parking make it tiring.
What is Punta Campanella?
It is the rocky tip of the peninsula and a protected marine area, reached by trails from the nearby villages. It is a good half-day walk with views of Capri; check the area's official page for current access rules.
