Gruyères is a small medieval village on a hill in the canton of Fribourg, in western Switzerland. Its steep, cobbled main street climbs to a castle built by the counts of Gruyère, and the castle houses a museum devoted to the Swiss artist H. R. Giger. The region gives its name to Gruyère cheese, which is made in dairies across the surrounding countryside, not only in the village.

The centre is small enough to see in an afternoon, so a half-day trip or an overnight stay both work. Trains run to Bulle, the nearest large station, and buses climb from there to the village. The cheese dairy La Maison du Gruyère sits in nearby Pringy, not in the village, so plan it as a separate stop. Pair the visit with a walk in the countryside around the village.

    Gruyères FAQ

    Is Gruyères worth visiting?

Yes, for a half day if you want a medieval hilltop village, the castle and the cheese. The village is small, so a full day is more than enough. Add Fribourg or Lausanne if you have another day.

How do you get to Gruyères from Geneva or Lausanne?

Take a train to Bulle, then a bus up to the village. Check the train and bus timetables before you travel.

How many hours do you need in Gruyères?

Half a day covers the castle and the old village. A full day adds the cheese dairy at Pringy and more time for lunch.

Is Gruyères the same as Gruyère cheese?

The cheese takes its name from the region. Gruyère AOP is made in dairies across several cantons, including Fribourg, not only in the village.

    What is moitié-moitié?

It is a Fribourg dish of half Gruyère and half Vacherin Fribourgeois, melted together and served with white wine. Ask for it in restaurants in the village and in Fribourg.

When is the best time to visit Gruyères?

Late spring to early autumn is best for walking and outdoor tables. In winter the village is cold, so check opening hours before you go.
