Central Switzerland

Central Switzerland is a hilly region of six cantons north of the main Alpine ridge. Visitors come for Lake Lucerne, the city of Lucerne and the mountains close to it.

Central Switzerland is one of the country's seven major regions, lying north of the main Alpine ridge. It covers six cantons: Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden and Zug, with Lucerne as its urban centre on Lake Lucerne. The region is a statistical unit used by the Federal Statistical Office, not a canton itself. The land is hilly and dense with towns, and valleys and meadows are worked more intensively than in much of the country.

The Urschweiz, made up of Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden and Nidwalden, is the smaller historic core. Its cantons regard themselves as the cradle of the Swiss Confederation, tied to a founding charter from 1291. They stayed Catholic after the Reformation, which set them apart from the neighboring Mittelland. For visitors, the region brings lakes, towns and mountains close together, and Lucerne is the natural place to start.

Central Switzerland in five

  1. Ride the Pilatus Golden Round Trip in either directionBoat, cogwheel railway, cableway, gondola and bus join in a loop, from CHF 59.90 on the operator's page, offered May to October. Go boat first for the cogwheel, or gondola first for the cogwheel on the way down.
  2. Reserve the cogwheel seat on busy daysPilatus calls its railway the steepest cogwheel line in the world, with gradients up to 48 percent, and recommends a seat reservation. It operates May to November.
  3. Pick Rigi for slower, longer viewsRigi calls itself the queen of the mountains and says it has Europe's first mountain railway plus eight others. Choose it when Pilatus is in cloud or when you want gentle walking.
  4. Go to Titlis from Engelberg for glacier and snowCable cars reach 3,020 m in about 30 minutes from Engelberg, including the first revolving cable car. The Cliff Walk and the glacier cave are free once you are at the top.
  5. Use scheduled lake boats as the transportThe Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Transfer Ticket are valid on regular SGV boats, and the Half Fare card gives 50% off. Between Brunnen and Flüelen, Lake Uri has a fjord-like shoreline. Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?

Central Switzerland FAQ

Is Titlis worth it compared with Pilatus and Rigi?

Pick Titlis if you want a glacier and snow at 3,020 m, reached from Engelberg by cable car in about 30 minutes. Pilatus and Rigi are the lake mountains you reach from Lucerne by boat and rail. Choose whichever webcam is clearest on your morning.

How many days do you need in Central Switzerland?

Three to four days. Use one for the lake and a boat leg, one or two for summits, and one spare day for weather. A single day is enough for one summit plus a boat, not for the whole region.

Are Lake Lucerne boats included in the Swiss Travel Pass?

Yes on scheduled services, according to the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company. The Swiss Transfer Ticket and Lucerne Travel Pass are also valid, and the Half Fare card gives 50% off. Special culinary cruises are separate.

When does the Pilatus cogwheel railway run?

May to November, according to Pilatus-Bahnen, with a journey of about 27 minutes up and 33 down. Outside those months, check the operator's timetable to see which lifts and gondolas run.

Is Lucerne or Engelberg the better base?

Lucerne for boats, Pilatus, Rigi and rail links. Engelberg only if Titlis is the trip, since it lies at the foot of the cable cars at 1,000 m. Lucerne gives more evening choice.
