Chapel Bridge

Walk across Lucerne’s 14th-century Chapel Bridge, see its painted roof panels and Water Tower, and enjoy views over the Reuss River and Old Town.

Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbrücke, crosses the Reuss River in Lucerne’s Old Town. Built in the 14th century as part of the city’s fortifications, the covered wooden bridge is known for its triangular roof paintings, which show scenes from local and Swiss history. Look up as you walk, then pause for views of the Water Tower, the river and the Old Town. Much of the bridge was rebuilt after a fire in 1993, and some of the paintings you see are replicas. Early morning is quieter for a walk and photos.

A bridge built into Lucerne’s defences

Chapel Bridge

Chapel Bridge, known locally as Kapellbrücke, crosses the Reuss River diagonally through Lucerne’s Old Town. It was built in the 14th century as part of the city’s fortifications and takes its name from nearby St. Peter’s Chapel. The bridge linked parts of the city on either side of the river while serving a defensive purpose.

The octagonal Water Tower stands beside the bridge. Built around 1300 as part of the fortifications, it predates the bridge. The tower has served several roles over the centuries, including as a watchtower, treasury, archive and prison.

Paintings beneath the roof

As you walk through the covered passage, look up at the triangular panels beneath the roof. Paintings added in the 17th century depict episodes from Lucerne and Swiss history, including the biographies of the city’s patron saints, St. Leodegar and St. Maurice. The painted panels turn the crossing into a short introduction to the city’s past.

A fire in 1993 destroyed a large part of the bridge and many of its paintings. The structure was restored, and replacement paintings were installed. Some surviving panels also came from a section removed in the 19th century. What you see today includes both historic work and replicas.

A short walk with views in every direction

The bridge is a working pedestrian crossing as well as a historic landmark, so you can explore it at your own pace while people go about their day. From the covered walkway, look out over the Reuss and towards the Old Town. The Water Tower is a distinctive subject from the riverbanks, while the roof panels are easiest to notice from inside the bridge.

Flower boxes decorate the railings during warmer months. The surrounding Old Town has cafés and shops, making it easy to continue your walk nearby or pause for a drink. For photographs without as much foot traffic, arrive early; the bridge becomes busier later in the day. In the evening, the bridge and river offer a different setting as the city lights come on.
