Männliturm

Climb Lucerne’s medieval Männliturm for views of the rooftops, Lake Lucerne and the Alps, and see the armored figure guarding its battlements.

Männliturm is a medieval tower on Lucerne’s Musegg Wall, above the city’s northern edge. Climb its 122 steps for views over red rooftops, Lake Lucerne and the Alps, with Hotel Château Gütsch also in sight. Look up at the small armored figure holding a flag and sword on one of the tower’s oriel turrets. The tower is open to the public from April to November, with free entry, and you can continue along the ramparts to explore nearby towers.

The tower takes its name from the small armored figure perched on an oriel turret. Männli means “little man”; the figure is about two metres high and holds a flag and a sword. It has watched over the tower since the Middle Ages.

Männliturm is the second tower on the rising ridge of Musegg Wall. The medieval fortification runs along the northern edge of Lucerne, and its towers preserve the city’s historic defensive character.

A climb of 122 steps leads to a view across Lucerne’s rooftops, Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alps. Hotel Château Gütsch is also visible from this vantage point. The view makes Männliturm a useful stop along a walk on the Musegg Wall; nearby Zyt Tower is another tower to explore.
