Lucerne (Luzern) is a city of about 86,000 people in central Switzerland, on Lake Lucerne where the lake drains into the river Reuss. It is the capital of the canton of Lucerne and the largest city in Central Switzerland. The Reuss divides the city into the Old Town and the New Town, linked by several bridges. The Chapel Bridge, a covered wooden bridge dated to 1365, crosses the Reuss and is the oldest surviving one in Europe. Its octagonal Water Tower stands in the middle.

The Old Town has half-timbered houses with painted fronts and remnants of its old walls. Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi rise above the lake and can be seen from its shores. Rigi has Europe's first mountain railway, and Pilatus can be reached from the city by a panoramic gondola and an aerial cableway. Late spring to early autumn suits lake walks and mountain rides, and rain falls in every season, so pack a rain jacket.

Lucerne FAQ

Pilatus or Rigi: which is better?

Pilatus is steeper and more dramatic, with the cogwheel railway in summer. Rigi is gentler, with more walking and wide views over several lakes.

How many days do you need in Lucerne?

Two days: one for the old town and the lake, one for a mountain.

Is Lucerne a good base for Switzerland?

Yes, for central Switzerland. Trains reach Zurich in about 45 minutes and Interlaken on the scenic Luzern–Interlaken Express.

Is Lucerne worth visiting?

Yes, for the old town, Chapel Bridge and the lake in a compact setting. It earns its place mainly because a mountain, such as Pilatus or Rigi, sits within an hour of the center.

Can you visit Lucerne as a day trip from Zurich?

Yes. Trains take about 45 minutes, and the old town plus a lake cruise fits a day. Stay a night if you want a mountain as well, since the lifts are slow to reach and weather-dependent.
