The Bernese Oberland is the high, southern corner of the canton of Bern, on the Alpine north side of the Bernese Alps. Its center is the upper Aare basin and two large lakes, Thun and Brienz. Thun is the gateway from Bern, and Spiez and Interlaken are the main tourist bases. Above them, Grindelwald lies just below the Eiger, Schreckhorn and Wetterhorn, and Lauterbrunnen, with Wengen and Mürren, sits on terraces above the valley floor.
The best-known trip is the rack railway from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch, known as the Top of Europe. Summer suits walking and lake days. Grimsel and Susten passes open only in summer, while the Brünig Pass is open all year. Winter brings skiing in Adelboden, Lenk and Saanenland, where Gstaad is the best-known resort. Mountain railways run in daytime hours and some summits close in winter, so check timetables before you travel.
Bernese Oberland in five
- Pick one base before you pick the mountainsThe Oberland is a set of valleys, not one town. Choose a valley village for the lifts you want, or Interlaken for rail and boats, then add the rest as day trips.Grindelwald or Interlaken?
- Use the lake boats as transport, not just a cruiseBLS boats on Lake Brienz run daily from April to early December, linking Interlaken with Brienz and its steam cog railway. On Lake Thun, a daily winter service runs between Thun and Interlaken West from mid-December to mid-March.
- Weigh the Berner Oberland Pass against a Swiss passGrindelwald Tourismus lists the regional pass as covering train and bus routes, over 25 mountain railways and cable cars, boats on both lakes and a special Jungfraujoch fare. Price your own route before buying. Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?
- Plan Ballenberg between April and early NovemberThe Swiss Open-Air Museum above Brienz is open daily 10:00 to 17:00 from 9 April to 1 November 2026. It is a full-day stop, so pair it with the Lake Brienz boat rather than rushing a corridor of villages.
- Reserve a slot for the Oeschinensee cable carThe Kandersteg cable car runs daily 8:30 to 17:00 from 21 September to 8 November 2026, and the operator recommends buying a boarding pass with a time slot online. Check the timetable for other dates.

Where should I stay in the Bernese Oberland?
Stay in Interlaken for trains, lake boats and rain-day choices, or in a valley village such as Grindelwald if the lifts and trails are the point. Two nights in each often beats four in one, because it halves the commute to your mountain.
How many days do you need in the Bernese Oberland?
Four to six days. That covers two bases, one or two high-mountain days, a lake day and a spare day for cloud. With only two days, choose one valley and skip the lakes.
Is the Berner Oberland Pass worth it?
Only if you will ride many lifts, boats and buses in the region. It bundles over 25 mountain railways and cable cars and the lake boats, but a Half Fare Card or a Swiss Travel Pass can win on routes outside the Oberland. Price your route first.
What is the best month for the Bernese Oberland?
June to September for hiking and open lifts, with September calmer and often clearer. Many cable cars and some railways pause between seasons, so April and November suit the lakes, not the high mountains.
Can you visit the Bernese Oberland without a car?
Yes. Trains reach Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Kandersteg, boats cover both lakes and postbuses fill the gaps. A car adds little, and Mürren and Wengen are car-free villages reached by rail and lift.
