Grindelwald is a village in the Interlaken-Oberhasli district of the canton of Bern, in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland. It sits at about 1,050 m above sea level on a south-facing slope above the valley floor, in the Lütschine valley beneath the Eiger. The Bernese Oberland Railway reached the village in 1890 and ends here on its line from Interlaken. It is also the only tourist resort in the Jungfrau region that can be reached by car, on a cantonal road from Interlaken.

Most people come for winter skiing or for summer hiking and mountaineering. Trains and cable cars from the village reach viewpoints such as Männlichen and First, and the Jungfraujoch, at about 3,454 m the highest railway station in Europe. In summer, buses run over the Grosse Scheidegg to Meiringen; beyond the pass, travel is by postbus or bicycle. Foehn storms can hit the mountains, so check local conditions before a long walk.

Grindelwald FAQ

Is Grindelwald worth visiting?

Yes, if you want a large mountain village with lifts, walks and the Eiger above it. It is less compact than Zermatt or Mürren, so it suits visitors who like variety: First, Männlichen, Pfingstegg and the Jungfraujoch all start here.

How many days do you need in Grindelwald?

Two to three days. Use one for First and Bachalpsee, one for the Jungfraujoch on the clearest morning and the rest as a weather buffer or a valley walk. A single night leaves no room for cloud.

Where in Grindelwald should you stay?

Near Grindelwald Terminal if the Eiger Express and an early Jungfraujoch start matter, or in the village center for shops and restaurants. The valley is spread out, so check the walk or bus ride to your lift before you book.

How do you get from Interlaken to Grindelwald?

Take the Berner Oberland Railway from Interlaken Ost. Grindelwald Tourismus gives the journey as around 30 minutes, direct. Trains run coupled to Zweilütschinen, where one part continues to Lauterbrunnen, so board the Grindelwald section.

What can you do in Grindelwald when it rains?

The sports center has an indoor pool, sauna, bouldering wall and, in season, an ice rink. The local museum opens late December to March and June to mid-October. Do not buy a Jungfraujoch ticket for a rainy day.
