Wooden houses in the valley of Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, with a waterfall and mountains

Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a village in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, known for its waterfalls and a deep U-shaped valley. Trains reach the villages above it, and the Schilthorn is within reach.

Lauterbrunnen is a village and municipality in the canton of Bern, in the Bernese Oberland, at the foot of the Bernese Alps. The valley is deep and U-shaped, with limestone cliffs that rise up to 1,000 m, and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau overlook it. Staubbach Falls, less than 1 km from the village, drops 297 m. The Trümmelbach Falls are several waterfalls inside a mountain, about 3 km away, and a post bus from the village station takes you there.

The municipality also includes Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh, so you can stay on the valley floor or in a village above it. Trains from Interlaken and the Jungfrau railway via Kleine Scheidegg add to your options. One day can cover the valley's main falls, while two or three days leave time for the Jungfrau region and the Schilthorn. July is the wettest month, with about 144 mm of rain or snow, and October is the driest, so plan the mountain days around the weather.

Lauterbrunnen in five

  1. Sit in the front section of the Interlaken trainThe Berner Oberland Bahn from Interlaken Ost reaches Lauterbrunnen in 24 minutes, but the rear cars split off at Zweilütschinen and run on to Grindelwald. Board the front section.
  2. Go to Trümmelbach Falls while the meltwater runsThe ten glacier falls inside the mountain open daily from early April to early November. Flow is strongest in spring snowmelt and summer glacier melt; from December to March it is only a trickle.Lauterbrunnen in one day
  3. Check the Schilthorn cable car dates firstThe Schilthorn cableway is closed for maintenance from 19 to 30 October 2026, with a shuttle bus in its place, and again in spring 2027. Fit the summit into a clear day outside those dates. Is the Schilthorn worth it?
  4. Leave the car at Wilderswil or MattenParking in Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg is limited at busy times, and Wengen and Mürren have no road access. The valley tourist office points drivers to park-and-ride at Matten and Wilderswil.
  5. Price the lifts before you buy a passWengen, Kleine Scheidegg, Mürren and the Schilthorn add up quickly. The Jungfrau Travel Pass and the Swiss Travel Pass cover different lifts, so total your rides first. Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?

Lauterbrunnen FAQ

Is Lauterbrunnen worth visiting?

Yes, if cliffs and waterfalls are the point. The village sits under a 297 m drop, Trümmelbach is a short bus ride away and Wengen and Mürren add car-free walks. It disappoints only in heavy cloud, when the walls vanish.

How do you get from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen?

Take the blue-and-yellow Berner Oberland Bahn from Interlaken Ost, about 24 minutes. Sit in the front section, because the rear cars split off at Zweilütschinen for Grindelwald.

Is Trümmelbach Falls worth it?

For most visitors, yes, particularly in late spring and summer when meltwater peaks. It is open from early April to early November, small children up to age 4 and dogs are not admitted, and it is a poor choice in deep winter.

Should you stay in Lauterbrunnen, Wengen or Mürren?

Lauterbrunnen for trains and an easy arrival, Wengen for quiet streets and Kleine Scheidegg, Mürren for the Schilthorn and the cliff view. Wengen and Mürren are car-free.

Can you visit Lauterbrunnen in winter?

Yes, for snow and skiing in Wengen and Mürren, but Trümmelbach is closed until April and the Staubbach path is summer only. The falls are strongest in spring and early summer.
