Arcos de la Frontera is a hilltop town in Cádiz province, in Andalusia, Spain, and the largest municipality in the Sierra de Cádiz comarca. The old town sits on a sandstone ridge above a sharp loop of the Guadalete river, and the town is the entrance to the Pueblos Blancos (White Villages) route. Its historic centre was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1962.
Visitors come for the old streets and the views. Plaza del Cabildo, the main square, holds the parador, the castle, the church of Santa María and a viewpoint over orchards and countryside to the west, south and east. The castle is medieval and of Moorish origin, but it is private property, so you see it only from outside. The slopes around the town are very steep, nearly vertical on the southwest and north sides, so expect hilly walking.

- Park below the old townLanes near Plaza del Cabildo are narrow, steep and often one-way. Use the car parks at the foot of the old town and walk up, even if your hotel offers a drop-off.
- Stand on Plaza del Cabildo at sunsetThe balcony over the Guadalete gorge is the village's signature view. The Basilica of Santa María and the Mirador de Abades are minutes away.
- Base here, not Jerez, for the villagesJerez is better for sherry and flamenco. Arcos is closer to the hills, so it is the better base for a loop through Vejer, Ronda and the Sierra de Grazalema.Jerez de la Frontera
- Plan around Holy WeekProcessions fill the old town and push room prices up, and the lanes close to traffic for hours. The dates move each year, so check them before booking.

Is Arcos de la Frontera worth visiting?
Yes for the cliff-top setting and the lanes, if you do not need a lot of sights. Half a day covers it; a night brings the quiet streets and a good sunset.
Can you visit Arcos de la Frontera from Seville?
Yes, about an hour by car. Public transport is limited, so a rental car or a tour is the practical way. Leave early to avoid the heat and the parking.
How long do you need in Arcos de la Frontera?
A few hours for the old town and viewpoints. Stay a night if you want dinner with a view and an early walk without the day-trippers.
Is it hard to drive in Arcos de la Frontera?
In the old town, yes: lanes are narrow and steep. Park below and walk up. If your hotel is inside the walls, ask about the drop-off route before you arrive.
Arcos or Ronda: which is better?
Ronda for the famous bridge and bigger sights; Arcos for a small, quiet village with fewer crowds. Many loops include both, about 1 to 1.5 hours apart by car.
