Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera is the home of sherry, and visitors come for winery tours, flamenco in the old quarters and horse shows at the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art.

Jerez de la Frontera is a city in the province of Cádiz, in southern Spain's Andalucía region. It gives its name to sherry, the fortified wine, and many of its bodegas (wineries) open their cellars for guided tastings. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art stages horse shows where trained Andalusian horses perform to music.

Flamenco is part of everyday life in the old quarters, especially Barrio de Santiago and Barrio de San Miguel, and you can find it in small venues around the city. The old town holds the Alcázar, a fortress with Moorish origins, and a cathedral. Jerez suits travelers who want a slower pace with a winery visit and a horse show. It is a day trip from Seville or Cádiz, or a base for a night or two. Summer is very hot, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit. Plan at least one full day to see the city.

Jerez de la Frontera in five

  1. Book bodega tours aheadThe larger bodegas run set tour times, often in English, and midday slots fill in spring and autumn. A typical tasting covers fino, amontillado and oloroso, so ask what is included.
  2. See the horses at the Royal Andalusian SchoolThe Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre stages dancing-horse shows on set days only. Check the calendar and book in advance, especially in spring.
  3. Take the train from Seville or CádizTrains from Seville take roughly an hour and from Cádiz about 35–45 minutes. Jerez works as a day trip from both, with the station within reach of the old town by taxi or a short bus ride.Cádiz travel guide
  4. Catch flamenco in Barrio de Santiago and San MiguelJerez is a birthplace of flamenco, and small venues in these old quarters host live shows on most evenings. Ask your hotel which are running that week.
  5. Plan around the horse fair and race weekendsThe Feria del Caballo in May and motor-racing weekends at the Circuito de Jerez fill hotels and raise prices. Book early or pick a different week.

Jerez de la Frontera FAQ

Is Jerez worth visiting?

Yes if you like sherry, flamenco or horses. The old center is walkable, bodega tours are easy to book and the town is less touristy than Seville or Cádiz. Add it as a day trip or one night.

Is Jerez a day trip from Seville?

Yes. Trains take roughly an hour, so a day covers a bodega tour, lunch and an evening back in Seville. Stay overnight if you also want the horse show and a flamenco evening.

What is the sherry triangle?

The three towns where sherry is made and aged: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Jerez has the biggest names, and Sanlúcar is known for manzanilla.

Do you have to book a bodega tour?

For the larger bodegas, yes, especially in spring and autumn. Smaller ones may take walk-ins at some times. Book English-language slots a few days ahead and ask what the tasting includes.

When is the best time to visit Jerez?

April, May, September and October for warm but not extreme heat. The horse fair in May is lively but costly, and July and August are very hot, so visit bodegas in the morning.
