Vejer de la Frontera is a hilltop town in the province of Cádiz, in Andalusia, southern Spain. It sits on a hill overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar, with orchards and orange groves on the land below and the Atlantic coast about 8 km away. The walled historic centre, with its castle and several churches, was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1976. Many houses keep architecture from the Moorish period, which lasted from 711 until Christian forces took the town. The name 'de la Frontera' refers to its old frontier with the Emirate of Granada.
Vejer works well for a slow visit with a day set aside for the coast. Walk the lanes, climb to the castle and city walls, and visit the Museum of Customs and Traditions in the former Concepcionist convent or the Museum of History and Archaeology in the Marqués de Tamarón palace. El Palmar, a small village on the Atlantic, is the main beach stop, and the rural village of Santa Lucía has a Roman aqueduct. Summer brings more visitors, with the Velada de Nuestra Señora de la Oliva pilgrimage in August and the Festival Internacional Jazz Vejer.
