Los Caños de Meca is a small coastal village in the province of Cádiz, in Andalusia, Spain. It sits on the Costa de la Luz just east of Cape Trafalgar, about 8 km west of Barbate town and 8 km southeast of Conil de la Frontera. The village takes its name from its caños, freshwater springs that flow from the cliff face, with the flow changing by season and rainfall. In summer it is a major holiday resort with many beaches, some of them nudist.
Cape Trafalgar is a protected natural monument, and its cliffs and pine woods lie within the Breña y Marismas del Barbate natural park, where threatened birds nest. The Battle of Trafalgar was fought off the cape on 21 October 1805, and its lighthouse is visible from the village. The beaches north of the cape are wide, flat and sandy, with dunes and some reefs, while the eastern coves are smaller and sheltered by rock walls. Caño Grande, the largest spring, is hard to reach and needs low tide. Cala Verde can only be reached on foot at low tide, so check tide times first.
Los Caños de Meca in five
- Bring a car: there is no trainLos Caños sits off the main road between Vejer and Barbate. Local buses run from nearby towns, but timetables are sparse, and a car makes sunsets and beaches easy.Getting around Spain
- Check the wind before you pick a beachThe Levante, the east wind, can blow for days and makes some beaches unpleasant. Check the forecast and have a sheltered alternative in mind.
- See the sunset near the Trafalgar lighthouseThe cape above the village is a good place to watch the sun go down over the Atlantic. Bring a layer, as it turns cool when the sun goes.
- Walk the beach toward the Torre del TajoThe pine-backed beach runs toward the old watchtower at the foot of the cliffs. Go at low tide and check footing, because some stretches are rocky.
- Pair it with Vejer and ZaharaVejer de la Frontera is 20 minutes inland for restaurants and a white-village base, and Zahara de los Atunes lies along the coast.Vejer de la Frontera

Is Los Caños de Meca worth visiting?
Yes, if you like long beaches, pine woods and sunsets without a resort feel. It has little nightlife or sightseeing, so plan it as a day or a short stay on a coast route.
How do you get to Los Caños de Meca?
By car, in about 1–1.25 hours from Jerez airport. Local buses run from Vejer, Barbate and Cádiz, but timetables are sparse. Check them before you plan a day trip without a car.
Is Los Caños de Meca good for a beach holiday?
For a quiet one, yes. The beaches are long and often uncrowded, but wind can be strong. If you want big hotels and a promenade, the Costa del Sol, such as Fuengirola, is the opposite.
Should you stay in Los Caños or Vejer?
Stay in Los Caños for the beach and sunsets, and in Vejer for restaurants, white-village atmosphere and easier evenings. Vejer is only 20 minutes away by car, so many travelers choose Vejer.
Can you visit the Trafalgar lighthouse?
The cape is a popular viewpoint, but access to the lighthouse itself may be restricted. Check local signs and the municipality's information before you go.
