Triglav National Park is Slovenia's only national park, covering about 840 square kilometers in the northwest of the country. It is named for Mount Triglav, at 2,864 meters the highest peak in Slovenia, and takes in much of the Julian Alps: limestone ridges, deep valleys, the Soča River and Lake Bohinj, a glacial lake. People come to hike mountain trails, walk beside lakes and rivers, and stay in mountain huts.
The park suits travelers who are comfortable on mountain trails, and it rewards some planning. Valley walks, gorges and waterfalls can be done in a day. The summit of Triglav is a serious climb that needs experience, a hut bed and an early start. High trails are usually free of snow from July to September, the main hiking season. Lake Bohinj suits lake walks, and the Soča Valley suits river walks. Plan at least two or three days to see the valleys, and longer if you want to climb a peak.

- Check park conditions before every walkThe park publishes current conditions and closures, and calls the Julian Alps a demanding area. Read them, plus the ARSO mountain forecast, the evening before you go.Park conditions
- Learn the trail grades before choosing a routeSlovenian trails are easy, difficult or very difficult. On difficult trails you use your hands and a helmet is mandatory; very difficult trails also need a climbing harness and a self-belay set.
- Reserve a Vrata Valley shuttle seatA reservation costs 3 EUR per seat and covers up to half the seats on each departure, boarding at Prodi parking or the Aljaž Lodge. The rest are first come, first served.Shuttle reservation
- Sleep in a hut or campsite, not out in the openOvernight stays outside designated areas are not permitted, and the park says there are enough beds in mountain huts. A booking system covers 21 of the most visited huts.
- Leave the drone, the swim and the bike behindDrones need the park's consent and swimming in high mountain lakes and streams is prohibited. Bikes are banned in the natural environment and dogs must be on a leash.Code of conduct

Is Triglav National Park free to enter?
The park site lists no gate fee, but some sites inside charge their own. Lake Bohinj covers Savica, Lake Bled covers the Vintgar Gorge and the Soča Valley covers the Tolmin Gorges.
Do you need a guide to climb Triglav?
Not by law, but the park calls the Julian Alps demanding and Slovenian tourist boards advise a licensed guide if you lack experience, especially on difficult or very difficult trails.
Can you camp in Triglav National Park?
Only at campsites and designated areas. Overnight stays outside them are not permitted, and the park points to mountain huts. Camper vans may park overnight only at campsites.
Can you swim in Triglav National Park?
Not in high mountain lakes and streams, which the park bans. Lake Bohinj has its own marked bathing areas, and the Lake Bohinj guide lists them.
What number do you call for mountain rescue in Slovenia?
Call 112. The UK government lists it as the mountain rescue number, and the park advises telling someone your route and return time before you set out.
