Lake Bled is an Alpine lake in the Julian Alps, in the Upper Carniola region of northwestern Slovenia, beside the town of Bled. It lies at about 475 meters above sea level, with mountains and forests around its shore. The lake is about 55 kilometers from Ljubljana, the capital, and about 35 kilometers from Ljubljana International Airport. The Lesce-Bled train station is about 4.2 kilometers from the lake.
Bled Island is the only natural lake island in Slovenia. Its pilgrimage church is reached by a Baroque stairway of 99 stone steps, dating from 1655. Bled Castle stands on a cliff above the north shore, and a walking path runs around the whole lake. In midsummer the water warms to about 22 to 26°C, and the warmest water, about 25°C, usually comes in July. Rowing boats can be rented on site, and the lake is popular for swimming.

- Budget 19 EUR for the castleAdults pay 19 EUR, students 11.50 EUR and children 7 EUR on the price list valid from 1 January 2025; children under 6 enter free. The castle opens 8:00 to 20:00 from April to October.
- Go to Vintgar by shuttle, not by carThere is no parking at the gorge. Park at the free LIP lot or board the shuttle at Bled bus station, and arrive 40 minutes before your slot. Shuttle access is included in the pass.

Is Lake Bled worth visiting?
Yes, for the island church, the castle view and the gorge, but go outside the peak hours. The Vintgar site says its busiest time is 10:00 to 13:00, and the same crowd logic applies on the lakefront.
How many days do you need at Lake Bled?
One long day covers the shore, the island and the castle. Two nights add Vintgar Gorge and a half day at Lake Bohinj, which is less rushed than fitting everything into one afternoon.
Can you visit Lake Bled as a day trip from Ljubljana?
Yes. Bled is 50 km away, with regular buses via Kranj and Radovljica, and the bus station is a few minutes from the lake. Book the Vintgar slot first and leave the castle for late afternoon.
Can you swim in Lake Bled?
Yes, at the designated bathing areas, including the castle lido and Mala and Velika Zaka. The tourist board says the lake reaches about 25 degrees C in summer and is up to 30 meters deep.
Do you need a car at Lake Bled?
No. The shore path is 6 km, buses reach the gorge shuttle, and parking near the castle is paid. Rent a car only if you will continue to Bohinj, the Soča Valley or the Vršič Pass.
