Lake Bohinj lies in northwest Slovenia, inside Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps. It is the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia. The lake is long and narrow, with forested slopes and high peaks along much of its shore. Hikers use it as a starting point for walks into the mountains.

The best-known sight is the Savica waterfall, in the hills above the lake. Most plans here are built around the water: a boat ride, a swim, and walks that start at the lake and climb toward the peaks. Summer suits swimming and hiking, and autumn is quieter. Plan at least one to two days for the lake and the waterfall, or longer if you want to hike seriously. Staying at the lake gives you more time on the shore. A day trip from Bled costs less to arrange but leaves less time on the water.

Lake Bohinj FAQ

Is Lake Bohinj better than Lake Bled?

Bohinj is larger and quieter, with trailheads and a boat; Bled is more compact, with a castle and an island church. Choose Bohinj for walking days and Bled for a short, sight-led stay.

How do you get from Ljubljana to Lake Bohinj?

Take the bus from the Ljubljana bus station via Bled to Ribčev Laz, or the train to Bohinjska Bistrica and a bus or taxi on. By car, Savica is 90 km from Ljubljana.

Can you swim in Lake Bohinj?

Yes, at the designated bathing areas at Fužinski Bay and Ukanc. The surface can warm to about 24 degrees C in summer, but check for algal bloom warnings and obey signs.

How hard is the walk to Savica waterfall?

It is a 553-step stone path of 20 to 25 minutes from the car park. The tourist board calls it relatively easy but unsuitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

Is the Vogel cable car open?

Not for now: the operator says it is closed for extensive maintenance until 1 December 2026, with a reopening date still to come. Check the Vogel website before you build a day around it.
