The Soča Valley sits in northwestern Slovenia, in the Julian Alps. The Soča River runs green and clear through it, from the mountains toward the Italian border, where it is called the Isonzo. Most people come for the water. Rafting, kayaking and canyoning run in the warmer months, and the Tolmin Gorges can be walked on marked paths. Bovec, Kobarid and Tolmin are the main towns to base yourself in.

The valley also holds the history of the Isonzo Front, where Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies fought along the river during the First World War. Kobarid has a museum on that campaign, and war sites are spread through the valley. Late spring to early autumn is when the water is warmest and the trails are open. Pick your base town by the activity you plan first.

Soča Valley in five

  1. Choose Bovec for activity, Kobarid for historyBovec is the base for rafting, kayaking, hiking and cycling. Kobarid has the museum of the Isonzo Front and an easy walk to Kozjak waterfall; the Tolmin Gorges lie further south.
  2. Budget for the small entry feesIn 2026 Kozjak lists adults at 5 EUR (1 April to 31 October), the Kobarid Museum 8 EUR and the Tolmin Gorges 8 EUR, rising to 12 EUR from June to September.Kobarid Museum
  3. Check the Kluže road worksThe Predel to Bovec road at Kluže is fully closed from 8:00 to 14:30 between 5 October and 24 December 2026, with traffic diverted over the Vršič Pass. Plan crossings outside those hours.Road works notice
  4. Decide on the Julian Alps Card: Soča ValleyAdults pay 25 EUR in 2026 and children 7 to 14 pay 15 EUR. Tolmin Gorges in summer (12), Kozjak (5) and the museum (8) already add up to 25 EUR, so the card pays from three sights.
  5. Arrive by car train or over the Vršič PassBoth routes into the valley are set out in The Julian Alps guide. Snow can close the Vršič road, and the car train needs you at the station well before departure. The Julian Alps

Soča Valley FAQ

Bovec or Kobarid: where should you stay?

Bovec suits rafting, canyoning and the Mangart road, while Kobarid suits the Isonzo Front museum, the Kozjak walk and quieter evenings. Many trips split two nights each.

Can you drive over the Vršič Pass?

In open conditions, yes, but snow or an avalanche can make it impassable. Check road news first; The Julian Alps guide has the parking rules at the top.

When can you go rafting on the Soča?

The park allows navigation from 15 March to 31 October at adequate flow, with entry from 9:00 and exit by 18:00, and it requires the park's consent. Book a licensed operator rather than improvising.

Do you need a car in the Soča Valley?

A car is easiest, but trains reach Most na Soči and summer hop-on hop-off buses and shuttles serve the valley. Check the tourist board's mobility page for the current season.

Is the Julian Alps Card: Soča Valley worth it?

Only if you plan three or more paid sights, as the sums in the essentials show. Skip it for a single gorge visit.
