The Julian Alps

Slovenia's high mountain range, with lakes at Bled and Bohinj, passes such as Vršič and the green Soča River, centered on Triglav National Park.

The Julian Alps are the mountain range in northwest Slovenia, with peaks that cross into Italy. Most of the range sits inside Triglav National Park, named for Triglav, at 2,864 meters the country's highest mountain. Travelers usually base themselves in Bled, Lake Bohinj, Kranjska Gora or the Soča Valley, and roads and trails connect them.

Bled is known for its lake, with a small church on an island and a castle on the cliff above. Lake Bohinj is larger and quieter, and the Soča is a clear green river with trails along its banks. The range suits hikers, cyclists, paddlers and families who want mountains close to lakes. Summer is the main season for hiking and swimming, and Kranjska Gora is also a winter ski base. Several days lets you move between the valleys at an easy pace.

The Julian Alps in five

  1. Pick two bases, not fourThe lakes of Bled and Bohinj sit on one side of Triglav National Park, Kranjska Gora and the Soča Valley on the other. Two nights per base beats a daily loop through the passes.
  2. Cross the range by car train as well as by passThe car train links Bohinjska Bistrica with Podbrdo, Most na Soči and Nova Gorica daily. Be at the station 20 minutes before departure and check the Slovenian Railways timetable.Lake Bohinj
  3. Plan the Vršič Pass around the new parking barriersSince 1 September 2026 barriers control parking at the top: 80 car spaces, free until the end of 2026. Snow or an avalanche can make the pass impassable, so check road news first.Soča Valley
  4. Compare the three Julian Alps cardsBled's card is free with 3 nights at a partner stay, Bohinj's needs 2 nights and is sold, and the Soča Valley card costs 25 EUR for adults in 2026. Check each partner list before buying.
  5. Keep to the park rules on every pass and trailThe park bans fires, drones without its consent and bikes in the natural environment, and wild camping is illegal in Slovenia. Triglav National Park lists the rules, the fines and the shuttle booking.Triglav National Park

    The Julian Alps FAQ

How many days do you need in the Julian Alps?

Four days work for two bases, for example Bled with Bohinj, and a week adds the Soča Valley. Fewer than three nights turns the trip into driving between viewpoints.

Do you need a car in the Julian Alps?

Not for Bled and Bohinj, which have buses and trains. A car helps for the Vršič Pass and the Soča Valley, although summer buses and the Bohinj car train cover parts of the loop.

Are the Julian Alps the same as Triglav National Park?

No. The park covers 840 square kilometres around Triglav and overlaps almost completely with the eastern Julian Alps; the wider range continues into Italy.

Where should you stay in the Julian Alps first?

Bled for a short trip without a car, Bohinj for walking, Kranjska Gora if the Vršič Pass is the point, and Bovec or Kobarid for the Soča. Two bases are enough for most trips.

Does Triglav count as hiking above 3,000 meters for insurance?

No: Triglav is 2,864 m. Still check that your policy covers mountain walking and via ferrata sections and states its altitude limit before you buy.
