Piran is a small seaside town on the Slovenian coast of the Adriatic, on the Istrian peninsula. Its old town climbs a hill above the harbor, with narrow stone lanes and houses built under Venetian rule, which lasted from 1283 to 1797. The seafront square, Tartini Square, is named after Giuseppe Tartini, the 18th-century violinist and composer who was born in Piran.
A day or one night is enough to walk the old town, the square and the town walls, and to swim or eat by the sea. Punta, the point at the end of the peninsula, is reached by a walk along the shore. Late spring to early autumn is the best time, when the sea is warm enough for swimming. If you come by car, decide where to park before you arrive, because the old town is best covered on foot.

Read the guidePiran FAQ
Is Piran worth visiting?
Yes, for the Venetian-style old town and the seafront; the whole town is protected heritage. An overnight stay lets you see the lanes after the day-trip crowds leave.
Can you drive into Piran?
You can, but visitors without permits pay by the started hour in the center, and the tourist board lists garages and a mini bus to Tartini Square. A garage is the sensible choice.
Is Piran a day trip from Ljubljana?
It works by direct Arriva bus or by car, but a day trip puts you in the lanes with the other day visitors. Sleep one night to see the town in the evening; the Ljubljana day-trips guide compares the other options.
How long do you need in Piran?
Half a day covers the main square, the lanes and the seafront. Stay a night to add Portorož's beaches or the Sečovlje Salt Pans, which the tourist board lists nearby.
Should you stay in Piran or Portorož?
Piran for atmosphere and walking, Portorož for beach hotels, spas and the marina. A local bus links them for 1 EUR by app or City Card.
