Izola is a small fishing town on the Adriatic coast of Slovenia, in the Istria region, between the larger coastal towns of Koper and Piran. The old center sits around a working harbor, and the waterfront is the place to walk, eat and watch the boats. The town has several bathing areas, and paths climb the hills above the sea. The streets are compact, so most of the center can be covered on foot.
Izola suits travelers who want a calmer base on the coast than Piran, or a few quiet days by the water with easy day trips. Koper is a walk or bike ride away along the coastal road, and buses link Izola with Piran. The Strunjan nature park, with its valley trails, is also close. Late spring through early autumn is the best season for swimming and walking. Two to three days covers the town itself; add time if you plan to hike or take day trips along the coast.

- Ride the summer tourist trainIn peak summer a tourist train stops at the large lots outside the center and runs from one end of the town to the other. A round trip costs 6 EUR for adults and 4 EUR for children.
- Hike the Strunjan Valley loopThe circular route from Belveder through the Strunjan Landscape Park is about 11 km and 3 hours, and returns to Izola along the former Parenzana railway.
- Leave the beach picnic fire at homeCampfires on the beaches are not allowed and the town has no public campfire areas. The tourist office suggests a restaurant, or a snack that you take away with you.

Read the guideIzola FAQ
Is Izola worth visiting?
Yes if you want a calm, walkable harbor town with trails behind it. It is quieter than Piran and a good base for the old coastal road, the Strunjan Valley and the Parenzana trail.
Izola or Piran: where should you stay?
Izola is calmer and more walkable, with hillside trails and a harbor; Piran is the postcard old town and busier. Pick Izola for slower stays and Piran for evenings among the lanes.
Can you walk from Izola to Koper?
Yes. It is the 4 km old coastal road described above, a good evening walk before a bus or the train from Koper.
Can you swim in Izola?
Yes. The tourist office describes a diverse range of bathing areas around the town. Follow the signs, keep fires off the beaches and take your litter with you.
Do you need a car in Izola?
No. The center is walkable, parking is on the edge of town, and buses connect Koper and Piran. Bikes, e-scooters and a sea taxi cover short hops.
