Braga is a historic religious center in northwestern Portugal and the capital of Braga district in the Minho province. The Archdiocese of Braga is the oldest in Portugal, and the Sé Cathedral, rebuilt from the late 11th century, is its main church. The Romans called the city Bracara Augusta. Today it is also an entrepreneurial technology hub.
The Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary on Monte Santo, above the city, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2019. You can walk up a trail or take the Bom Jesus funicular, one of the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula. The main international airport for Braga is Sá Carneiro (Porto Airport), about 50 km away; public transit from Braga center to it takes roughly 40 minutes, and the aerobus takes about 50 minutes. Summers are much hotter than on the Atlantic coast, while frost forms on about 29 days a year and most of the annual rain, about 1,449 mm, falls between autumn and spring. Plan one full day for the center and the sanctuary.

Read the guideBraga FAQ
Is Braga worth visiting?
Yes for a lived-in northern city with a cathedral, baroque churches and the Bom Jesus stairway. It is less polished than Porto and usually quieter.
How do you get from Porto to Braga?
By regional train or bus, and Alfa Pendular trains call at Braga on the Lisbon route. Check CP's timetable and the last train back for a day trip.
How much is the Bom Jesus funicular?
The sanctuary's site lists 2.50 euros one way and 4 euros return, with different summer and winter hours. The bell tower and choir loft have a separate small fee.
Can you do Braga and Guimarães in one day?
Yes if you start early and use buses or a car, but you will see less of each. A night in one base makes both easier.
When is the best time to visit Braga?
May to September for the driest days, and Holy Week for processions if you book early. Winter is cool and wet, with fewer visitors.
