Peneda-Gerês National Park

Granite peaks, oak woods and waterfalls in northern Portugal, with forest trails and stone villages to walk between.

Peneda-Gerês is Portugal's only national park, in the far north of the country on the Spanish border. Granite peaks, oak and chestnut woods and fast rivers fill its hills. Iberian wolves and the Garrano, a small local horse breed, live here too, though you are more likely to spot the horses than the wolves.

Walking is the main draw. Trails run from short forest loops to longer routes past waterfalls and up to high ridges. Lindoso, with its stone granaries and old castle, shows how people farmed these hills for generations. Soajo has its own granaries. It suits walkers and anyone who wants quiet days in the countryside. Spring and early autumn are the easiest seasons for walking. Plan at least two or three days, and longer if you want to hike the main routes.
