Viana do Castelo is a coastal city in Northern Portugal and the seat of its district, set where the Lima River meets the Atlantic. The old centre has churches and palaces from the 15th to 17th centuries, including a cathedral with a Romanesque-style façade and a Gothic portal carved with scenes of the Passion of Christ. Above the city, the Sanctuary of Saint Lucy on the Santa Luzia mountain gives wide views over the river, the town and the coast.
The city lies on the Portuguese Way, so pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela pass through it. It is known for traditional pastries, including the torta de Viana and the almond sidónio. The Festa de Nossa Senhora d'Agonia, one of Portugal's largest and oldest religious festivals, fills several days with processions, traditional dances and fireworks. Summers are relatively dry, while winters are mild and rainy, and the city is one of the rainiest in mainland Portugal.

Is Viana do Castelo worth visiting?
Yes, for a coastal city with a historic center, a hilltop view and beaches, without the crowds of the Algarve. It suits travelers who like seafood and walking.
How many days do you need in Viana do Castelo?
One day covers the center and the Santa Luzia hill. Two or three nights let you add the beaches and a valley drive, which is the best use of a base here.
Can you visit Viana do Castelo from Porto?
Yes, by train, bus or car. Check CP and bus times for your day, since a late return needs planning, and plan a night if you want evenings by the river.
When is the best time to visit Viana do Castelo?
June to September is warm enough for beaches, with August the busiest because of the festival. May and September are good for fewer crowds.
Is Viana do Castelo better than Braga?
They differ. Viana is a coastal base with a sea breeze and beaches, while Braga is an inland city of churches and a sanctuary. Many travelers visit both.
