Aveiro is a city on Portugal's Atlantic coast, in the Centro Region, built beside the Ria de Aveiro lagoon. It is often called the Portuguese Venice for its canals. Moliceiro boats, once used to harvest seaweed for fertilizer, now carry visitors along the Ria canals, and a boat trip is the main way to see the lagoon. The old town has Romanesque buildings and Art Nouveau facades, and many early 20th-century buildings are decorated with traditional tiles. The 15th-century Monastery of Jesus holds the tomb of Princess Santa Joana, who died in 1490, and the Museu de Aveiro occupies the former convent.
Alfa Pendular and Intercity trains run along the Lisbon to Porto line, and the A1 motorway passes near the city. Intercity coaches also link Aveiro with Porto and Lisbon, with several departures each day. Buses from the city reach Costa Nova and Barra, beaches that draw many visitors in warm weather. Summers are dry with daytime highs around 24 to 25 °C (75 to 77 °F), and winters are wet. Ovos Moles de Aveiro, a protected sweet of egg yolk and sugar, is the traditional sweet to try.

- Stop here on the Lisbon to Porto lineAlfa Pendular trains between Lisbon and Porto call at Aveiro, so you can break the journey for an afternoon. Leave your luggage at the station or hotel and walk into the center.Getting around Europe
- Pick the boat for the canal, not the lagoonMoliceiro boats run short canal tours through the center. Longer lagoon trips go to salt pans and sandbars, so ask what the ticket covers and how long it lasts before you pay.
- Take the bus or a bike to Costa NovaThe striped houses at Costa Nova and the Barra beach are a short ride from town by bus, bike or car. Go in the morning in summer when the sand is quieter.
- Sleep here only if you want evenings by the canalAveiro is small, and a half day covers the center. A night adds quiet canal-side evenings and an easy start for Porto or Coimbra the next morning.Coimbra travel guide

Read the guideAveiro FAQ
Is Aveiro worth visiting?
Yes for a half day or a night: the canals, the moliceiro boats and the Art Nouveau streets. It is small, so it works as a stop, not a destination.
How many days do you need in Aveiro?
A half day to a night covers the center and a canal tour. Add a few hours for Costa Nova if the weather is good.
Can you visit Aveiro as a day trip from Porto?
Yes. Regional and Alfa Pendular trains run on the line, so you can go and return the same day. Check CP for the services and the last train back.
Is Aveiro really the Venice of Portugal?
People call it that for the canals and boats, but it is a small lagoon town with a flat center, not a city of waterways. Treat it as a canal-side stroll.
When is the best time to visit Aveiro?
May, June, September and October offer warm days and fewer visitors. Summer is busy at Costa Nova, and winter is mild and wet.
