The North Island is the smaller of New Zealand's two main islands, separated from the South Island by Cook Strait. Māori call it Te Ika-a-Māui. Auckland, the largest city, sits between two harbors. Wellington, the capital, lies at the southern tip, where ferries sail to the South Island. Visitors head to the geothermal area around Rotorua and Taupo to see hot springs and bubbling mud pools, and to Napier, the Art Deco city rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake.
A North Island trip is easiest when you choose two or three regions instead of trying to see everything. Allow at least a week to combine a geothermal area, a coastline and one of the main cities, and more time if you plan to drive between them. Summer, from December to February, is the warmest season and the busiest. Spring and autumn bring milder weather and smaller crowds, while winter is cooler.

- Apply for NZeTA before you flyMost visitors from visa-waiver countries need an NZeTA, filed online before the flight. Australian citizens are exempt, so check your passport against the rules on the official site before you book.Visas and entry
- Set up data before the driveMobile coverage can be patchy on rural roads, including the Coromandel and the Taupo backcountry. Download offline maps and set up an eSIM before you leave the airport.Phones and eSIM
- Drive on the left in a rental carNew Zealand traffic keeps to the left, and the roads to the Coromandel and the Bay of Islands are narrow and winding. Allow extra time on every stretch.
- Take the ferry to Waiheke from downtown AucklandWaiheke and the other Hauraki Gulf islands are reached by passenger ferry from the Auckland waterfront, so build the day around the sailing times.Hauraki Gulf Islands
- Stay on marked tracks in Rotorua's thermal areasThe ground around geysers and mud pools is hot and the crust can give way. Keep to boardwalks and signed paths, and ask before photographing people at a marae.Rotorua

How many days do you need on the North Island?
Ten to fourteen days covers Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo and Wellington at a steady pace. Add the Bay of Islands or the Coromandel if you have a car and a few spare days.
Do I need a car on the North Island?
Not in Auckland or Wellington, where buses and trains cover the city centers. For the Coromandel, the Bay of Islands and the drive from Rotorua to Taupo, a car lets you stop where you like.
Is Rotorua worth visiting?
Yes, for geothermal areas with geysers and mud pools, and for Māori cultural visits. It works well as a stop between Auckland and Taupo, and the sulphur smell surprises first-time visitors.
When is the best time to visit the North Island?
March to May and October to November have mild weather and fewer visitors. December to February is the busiest and warmest season, with the longest days.
Is Wellington worth a stop?
Yes, for the waterfront, the Te Papa museum and the cable car up to Kelburn. It is compact enough to walk, and one or two nights is enough for most trips.
