Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and sits on the North Island. It is known as the City of Sails for its strong sailing culture. The city stretches across a narrow neck of land, with Waitematā Harbour to the north and Manukau Harbour to the south. It is also built on the Auckland Volcanic Field, where about 53 volcanic cones and craters rise above the streets. Many are now parks with good views, including Maungawhau / Mount Eden.

Plan two or three days for the city and one island trip. Spend one day on the volcanic parks and museums, such as the Auckland War Memorial Museum and MOTAT, then take a ferry to Waiheke Island, Devonport or Rangitoto Island, the youngest volcano in the field. For beaches, the west coast surf spots such as Piha and Muriwai can have strong surf, so swim between the flags. The city is warmest in summer, and the sea peaks around 21 °C (70 °F) in February. Fog is common in autumn and winter.
