Waiheke Island lies in the Hauraki Gulf, off the North Island near Auckland. It is the gulf's most populated and most accessible island. Fullers passenger ferries take about 40 minutes from downtown Auckland to Matiatia wharf, and SeaLink car ferries sail to Kennedy Point in around 50 minutes to an hour. The island is very hilly and its roads are narrow, so most visitors use a rental car, motorbike, taxi, shuttle or tour.
The island's wineries are its best-known draw, and its maritime climate suits Bordeaux-type grapes. Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi are the main beaches, while Cactus Bay can only be reached by boat or kayak. Summer is the busiest season, and dry spells of three to four months between December and March can strain water supplies. Plan at least one full day, or stay a night if you want the wineries and beaches without rushing for the last ferry.
Waiheke Island in five
- Take the ferry from downtown AucklandRegular ferries leave downtown Auckland and take about 40 to 45 minutes. A car ferry carries vehicles, but a car is optional because buses and taxis serve the island.Auckland
- Hire wheels or use buses and taxisOn the island you can use public buses and taxis, or hire a mountain bike, motor scooter or car. Plan any wine tasting around a driver, a tour or a taxi, not your own wheels.
- Walk to Stony BatterAt the eastern end of the island the Stony Batter walkway leads to World War II gun emplacements and a system of underground tunnels. Allow a separate half day, away from the wineries.
- Pick a beach by what you wantOneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi are the white sand beaches, gently sloping into the Hauraki Gulf and suited to swimming, kayaking and picnics. Check weather and swell before choosing.Hauraki Gulf Islands
- Plan the return ferry before lunchFerries run to a timetable, so book your tasting or lunch around the last sailing you plan to take. Leave a buffer in winter, when weather can change services.

How long is the ferry to Waiheke Island?
About 40 to 45 minutes from downtown Auckland on the regular ferry, according to Tourism New Zealand. A car ferry also runs, but most visitors leave the car in Auckland and use buses, taxis or hire wheels.
Is Waiheke Island worth a day trip from Auckland?
Yes for a taste of the island: vineyards, olive groves and a beach. A day is tight if you also want a walk such as Stony Batter, so book a night if wine and walking are both on the list.
Do you need a car on Waiheke?
No. Public buses and taxis serve the island, and you can hire a bike, scooter or car. If you plan several tasting rooms, a tour or taxi is safer than driving.
What are the best beaches on Waiheke?
Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi are the white sand beaches named by Tourism New Zealand, all gently sloping into the Hauraki Gulf. Choose by distance from your base and weather on the day.
When is the best time to visit Waiheke Island?
Summer and early autumn are warmest for beaches and long lunches. Winter is quieter and cooler, and ferry timetables can change in poor weather, so keep one flexible day on a short trip.
