The Hauraki Gulf lies east of Auckland, on the northeast coast of New Zealand's North Island, and holds dozens of islands. Rangitoto is a young volcanic cone that rose from the sea about 600 years ago. Its black lava fields and summit track draw day visitors from the city. Tiritiri Matangi is a former farm restored as a bird sanctuary with no introduced mammalian predators, so native birds are easy to see up close. Great Barrier, known in Māori as Aotea, is the largest island in the group and the most remote of the three, with a rugged coast and small settlements.
Most visitors take a day trip from Auckland by ferry and see one island in a day. Great Barrier suits a longer stay, since the crossing takes more time and the island has places to sleep. Summer, from December to February, is the season for swimming. Autumn and spring suit walking in cooler weather. Ferry timetables change by season, so check the current one before you set a date.

Which Hauraki Gulf island should I visit first?
Rangitoto suits a half-day, while Tiritiri Matangi suits wildlife and bird watchers. Waiheke is the one for wine and beaches, and Great Barrier is the remote option.
Do I need to book Tiritiri Matangi in advance?
Yes in practice. DOC says the public ferry runs Wednesday to Sunday and can book up well in advance from November to April, so reserve before choosing your day.
What are the pest-free rules for island visitors?
Check and clean bags and shoes, seal food in containers, and use a Pest Free Warranted commercial vessel. Do not bring pets, and report any pest you find to the crew or a ranger.
Can you stay overnight on Tiritiri Matangi?
The only accommodation is a bunkhouse, mainly used by volunteers and students, so overnight places are limited. Most visitors do it as a day trip.
Is Great Barrier Island a day trip from Auckland?
Not realistically. It is far from the mainland, so plan at least one night and check the transport options for your dates.
