Wellington is New Zealand's capital, on the south-western tip of the North Island. It is the world's southernmost capital of a sovereign state and the country's third-largest city. Parliament, the Supreme Court and most public services are based here, though the capital role rests on long-standing convention rather than statute. People come for the coffee and the arts scene, and Cuba Street and Newtown are the places to browse creative shops and eat.

Wellington suits a two or three day city break, or a stop between the islands, since Cook Strait ferries run from here to Picton. Pack for wind: the average wind speed is 27 km/h, and winter southerly blasts can make the air feel much colder than the thermometer shows. Annual rainfall averages 1,250 mm, with June and July the wettest months. Summers are warm, so December to February suits a walk up Mount Victoria, a 196 m summit with views over most of the city.

  3. Book the Cook Strait ferry aheadFerries to Picton take about 3–3.5 hours. Car spaces fill in summer, and rough weather in the strait can cancel sailings.Transport planning
  4. Dress for the windWellington is one of the windiest cities in the world. A windproof jacket matters more than an umbrella.

Wellington FAQ

How many days do I need in Wellington?

Two days covers Te Papa, the waterfront, the Cable Car and Zealandia or Mount Victoria. Add a day for the Wairarapa wine region.

How long is the ferry from Wellington to Picton?

About 3–3.5 hours across Cook Strait. Book ahead with a car, and check for weather cancellations on the day.

Is Wellington worth visiting?

Yes, for the museum, food and walkable center, and it is on the way if you travel between the North and South Islands by ferry.

Do I need a car in Wellington?

No. The center is compact, buses reach the suburbs and the Cable Car handles the hill. Rent one to explore beyond the city or on the South Island.

Can I take a rental car on the Cook Strait ferry?

Many rental companies do not allow it and offer a drop-off and pick-up on each island instead. Check your contract before booking, since a car on the ferry also costs extra.
