Taupō is a town on the shore of Lake Taupō, the largest lake in New Zealand, in the central North Island. The lake fills a volcanic caldera, and the land around it still has geothermal activity. Huka Falls sits a short drive north of town, where the Waikato River narrows and runs fast through a narrow channel. The lake and surrounding land are tied to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, the local iwi, whose history is part of any visit.
Two or three nights gives you time for the lake, the falls and either a lake cruise or a swim. Summer, from December to February, is the best season for lake days and the crossing. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is about 86 km away, so if you plan to walk it, build the long drive into your day. Winter brings snow to Tongariro National Park, where skiing is the draw.

How far is Taupō from Auckland?
About 3 hours 10 minutes by road, or around 50 minutes by air. Rotorua is 1 hour away and Wellington about 5 hours, so Taupō suits a stop on the way between the two largest cities.
Is Huka Falls free to visit?
Yes. There is no charge to visit the falls or use the car park, which is a short walk from the viewing bridge. The water is dangerous, so stay on designated paths and platforms.
Do you need to book the Tongariro Alpine Crossing?
DOC recommends booking for all visitors using any part of the track, at no cost, and a booking is needed to use a shuttle or guided service. Book before travel in peak months, then confirm the weather the day before.
How long does the Tongariro Alpine Crossing take?
DOC lists 7 to 8 hours from November to April and about 9 hours from May to October. The track is 20.2 km one way, steep and exposed, so start early and carry layers even in summer.
Where should you stay for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing?
Tūrangi is about 36.7 km from the crossing and Taupō 86.5 km, so many walkers stay in Tūrangi, National Park or Whakapapa for an early shuttle. Taupō suits you if the lake is the main plan.
