Stay near the visitor center for a first one-night visit, because the Main Trail starts there and the gate opens early. Choose the town center for budget stays, Taybeh for quiet and cooler nights, and Al Bayda for northern trails. Overnight stays inside Petra are not allowed, and the UK and Canada both urge caution for Jordan, so check current advice first.

How to choose a base in Wadi Musa
Wadi Musa is the town next to the Petra visitor center, and it is where almost every visitor sleeps, because overnight stays inside the park are not permitted. The Wadi Musa travel guide covers the tickets and the town; this page is only about where to put your bed and how that choice changes your mornings. It also fits into a wider Jordan trip, where Wadi Musa usually sits between Amman and the desert camps of Wadi Rum.
The Visit Petra site describes Wadi Musa as the center of the Petra District in Ma'an Governorate, with a large number of four-star and five-star hotels alongside simpler places. That range makes the decision less about quality and more about three practical questions. How early do you want to be at the gate? Do you want an evening you can walk out into? And do you have a ride sorted for the days you are tired? Petra is a long walking day, so the hotel that saves you twenty minutes at dawn and the hotel that gives you a quiet night can be different buildings.
The price bands under each area are rough relative guides for a double room, from $ for simple guesthouses to $$$ for upscale hotels. No rates are quoted, because they swing with the season and the day of the week. Confirm the total, taxes and breakfast at booking.
1. Petra Gate and the visitor center
The streets around the visitor center are the obvious base for a first visit. The Visit Petra site places the visitor center in Wadi Musa and says it sells tickets, arranges licensed guides and provides maps and brochures, so everything you need before the walk is within a few minutes of a hotel here. The Main Trail starts at the visitor center and runs 3.9 km one way to Qasr al-Bint, with the Visit Petra listing giving 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes non-stop. Sleeping near that start means you can be in the Siq soon after the gate opens, when the light is flat and the groups have not arrived.
The convenience has a cost. Expect the most foot traffic here in the morning, and evenings that feel more like a service area for the park than a village. Compare rates for rooms a few streets back too, which trade a few minutes of walking for a different feel. If you want to book a Petra by Night ticket, which the official FAQ says runs on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, a base near the gate saves you a taxi at the end of the night.
Check what the hotel can do for you at 05:30. A breakfast that starts before the gate opens, a packed breakfast option and help with a taxi are worth more than a pool you will not use. The hotel can also tell you the current opening hours, which change with the season.

2. Wadi Musa town center
The town center is where Wadi Musa works as a town rather than a gate. The Visit Petra site notes how much the level of services has changed over the last decade, and the everyday streets away from the visitor center are where you find ordinary restaurants, shops and guesthouses at lower prices. For a stay of three or more nights, or for anyone traveling on a budget, it is the sensible compromise: you give up the five-minute walk and gain a place where dinner does not feel like part of a tour.
Plan the ride to the gate the night before. Taxis are available, and your host can arrange a pickup for the hour you choose. The hills in Wadi Musa matter for the return: a downhill walk to the visitor center in the morning becomes an uphill walk at the end of a day that already included thousands of steps. The Main Trail alone is listed at 5,118 steps one way, so the last climb to the hotel is not a small one.
Before you book, read recent comments for noise and for the hot-water and heating situation in the cooler months. Elevation is not extreme, but winter nights are cold, and an unheated room can feel worse than the forecast suggests.

3. Taybeh
Taybeh is the second largest town in the Petra area. Visit Petra says it sits at about 1,500 meters above sea level and overlooks Wadi Musa and Al-Rajif. In practice that means cooler air than the valley, views across the area and a village feel, with far fewer tour groups than the gate district.
It works best for travelers who put atmosphere above efficiency: couples, photographers who like sunset from a terrace, and people who have already seen the Siq and want a calmer second night. It is a poor choice for a one-night stay where you want to be at the gate at 06:30, because you must organize a ride down and a ride back every day, and you should not count on finding a taxi at the last minute after dark.
If you choose Taybeh, agree the pickup price and time with the hotel in advance, and ask whether a transfer from the visitor center in the evening is included. Pack a layer for cool evenings, even in months when Petra itself is warm.

4. Al Bayda
Al Bayda is a Bedouin community northeast of the archaeological site. The Visit Petra site says the people of Al-Bayda follow traditional Bedouin ethics of coexisting peacefully with nature and that visitors can see the small Al-Amarin ethnographic museum. It is the base for a different kind of Petra trip, built around the northern trails rather than the Siq.
Two of the listed trails start at the Umm Sayhun gate: the Argoob Jumay'an Trail, 1.9 km and listed as easy, and the Mughur Al Nasara Trail, 1.8 km and also easy, which the site describes as a route through Petra's northern entrance connecting the Bayda suburb to the Urn Tomb area. Staying here suits walkers who want to enter from the north, and it suits travelers who prefer a village stay to a hotel strip.
The trade-off is services. There are fewer restaurants, little nightlife and almost no walking access to the main visitor facilities. Arrange meals and transport in advance, and do not assume a taxi will appear when you need one. Confirm directly with the property how you will reach the gate and what time you can leave.

Choosing by trip length and style
One night is the most common stay, and it is the one most likely to disappoint if you choose badly. With a single night you want the Siq at opening time and the Monastery before the afternoon heat, so sleep in the gate area, ask for an early breakfast and avoid hotels that need a taxi in the dark. The Petra in 1 or 2 days plan shows how the hours fall.
Two nights suit a split. Spend the first night near the gate and the second in Taybeh or the town center, once you know how much walking you have in your legs. That also fits the ticket maths: a two-day Petra ticket costs 55 JD for visitors who stay a night in Jordan, and the Petra tickets, hours and Jordan Pass guide explains why the second day costs little. Families with young children usually do better near the gate, because short walks and a mid-afternoon rest in the room make the day workable.
Three nights or more is where Taybeh, Al Bayda and the town center earn their keep. The extra days go to the back trails and viewpoints rather than the Main Trail, and a quieter evening matters more when you are not racing the clock. Solo travelers and budget travelers can lean on guesthouses in the town center. If you are connecting Petra with the desert, the Wadi Rum guide covers the camps, and the Petra park guide covers the site itself.
Getting in and moving around
Visit Petra lists three main ways to arrive from Amman. A JETT bus is shown leaving the Abdali station at 06:30 and returning at 17:00, and the site points to the operator's website for booking. Public minibuses are listed from Amman's southern station between 09:00 and 16:00, returning from Petra between 06:00 and 13:00. A taxi or private car takes about 3 hours by the Desert Highway or about 4 hours on the King's Highway. From Aqaba, public buses take about 2 hours. Confirm every timetable with the operator, because a day-return bus does not suit an overnight stay.
Inside Wadi Musa, you walk or take taxis. Inside Petra, the only licensed vehicles are the golf carts, which the Visit Petra fee list prices at 15 JD one way from the visitor center to the Treasury (a 4 km ride) and 25 JD for two ways. Golf carts are available on arrival and do not need advance booking.
The rules and tips are on the Visit Petra tips page. For rides beyond town, the getting around Jordan page compares buses, drivers and rental cars, and the international driving permit guide covers what a rental needs.
Mistakes to avoid when booking
The first mistake is booking by the map pin. A hotel can look two minutes from the gate and sit across a valley with a steep road between. Ask the host how long the walk takes and whether it is uphill on the way back. The second is booking Taybeh for one night and then paying for two taxis at the hours when drivers are hardest to find. The third is overlooking the opening hours: the winter schedule on the Visit Petra site runs from 2 October 2026 to 1 March 2027, so a hotel advertising a "6 am start" may not match the gate.
The fourth is a day-trip mindset. A visitor who rides a bus from Amman at 06:30 and returns at 17:00 spends most of the day in a vehicle, whichever ticket tier applies. Even one night in Wadi Musa changes the day. The last is ignoring current advice. The UK government advises against all travel only within 3 km of the Syria border, but its Jordan page also warns of regional tension, and Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel to Jordan. Read both before you pay for non-refundable rooms, and check what your insurer will cover.
Booking tips for Wadi Musa
Visit Petra names March to May and September to November as the best times to visit, so those are the months to book earlier. In July and August, air conditioning matters more than a view. In winter, check heating, and remember that the UK government's advice warns of flash-flood risk in wadis from November to March, so a flexible rate is worth considering.
Most places accept cards, but cash machines are widely available only in Amman and other larger towns according to the UK government, so withdraw enough Jordanian dinars before you drive south. Petra ticket booths accept cash in Jordanian dinars or Visa card. Once the base is set, plan the day with Petra in 1 or 2 days, set up your phone before you land with an eSIM for Jordan and sort travel insurance that covers hiking and road transfers.
If your plans include the Dead Sea or the capital before or after Petra, the Amman and Dead Sea guides show how those stays fit around Wadi Musa, and the Jordan Pass guide explains the visa-fee and ticket side.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is the best area to stay in Wadi Musa for Petra?
The streets around the visitor center, if you want the shortest walk to the Main Trail and an early start. Choose the town center for lower prices or Taybeh for quieter, cooler nights, and arrange a ride to the gate.
Can you stay inside Petra overnight?
No. Visit Petra says overnight stays within the park are not permitted, and the UK government warns that you risk arrest if you are in the park outside opening hours. Sleep in Wadi Musa or a nearby village.
Is it better to stay in Wadi Musa or visit Petra as a day trip from Amman?
Staying is better for most people. A JETT bus from Amman is listed leaving at 06:30 and returning at 17:00, and the drive is about 3 hours each way. The 50 JD ticket tier needs a night in Jordan, not specifically in Wadi Musa, so a night in Amman qualifies, but Wadi Musa saves the long drive.
How far is Taybeh from the Petra visitor center?
The official sites do not give a distance, so ask the hotel and agree a taxi price and pickup time in advance. Taybeh sits about 1,500 meters above sea level, above Wadi Musa, so expect a ride down in the morning.
Do you need to book hotels in Wadi Musa in advance?
Book earlier for March to May and September to November, which Visit Petra names as the best seasons. Choose a refundable rate until you have checked the current UK and Canadian advice for Jordan.
