En resumen

Stay in La Fortuna town if you travel without a car and want tours, restaurants and shuttles on foot. Choose the volcano road for a quiet lodge with a view and hot springs close by, the waterfall road for farm country, and the lake shore only if you drive. Most trips of two or three nights work best with one base, not two.

How to choose a base in La Fortuna

La Fortuna is a small town with a lot of land around it, and where you sleep changes how each day starts. The La Fortuna travel guide explains the setting, the volcano, the hot springs and the waterfall. For the wider country, see the Costa Rica guide. Costa Rica's tourism board places Arenal Volcano about 7 km from the town, so no base here is far from the main sights, but the type of road and the number of restaurants between you and dinner vary a lot.

Four bases cover almost every stay. The town center is the practical one: restaurants, tour desks, supermarkets and shuttle stops sit within a few blocks, and many tour operators offer pickups from town hotels, which you should confirm when you book. The volcano road runs west toward the park and the big hot-spring resorts, and it trades walkability for quiet and views. The waterfall road heads south through farm country. The Lake Arenal shore sits farther west and works best with a car.

Price bands below run from $ (budget) to $$$ (upscale) and show how areas compare with each other, not quoted rates. Rates swing with the season, with the dry months from December to April and the holiday weeks costing the most. Check dates for two or three areas before you commit, because the same night can cost far more in a hot-spring hotel than in a simple room in town.

The town center is the default for a first visit. Restaurants range from simple local eateries to places with menus in English, and supermarkets make it easy to stock a day pack for the park. Tour operators often arrange pickups from hotels in town, so a morning on the water or a night soak can start without a taxi. Costa Rica's tourism board notes that tourism companies in La Fortuna offer suspension bridges, nature trails and canopy tours, and most of those desks are here.

Hotels in town cover hostels, simple cabinas and mid-range properties, with a few larger hotels set back from the main street. Some include a pool and breakfast, which matters because breakfast hours often decide when the first tour leaves. Rooms facing the volcano exist but are not guaranteed, and the cone is hidden by cloud on many afternoons, so treat a view as a bonus.

The trade-off is noise and a lack of nature at the door. Main-street rooms can hear traffic, and the forest is a drive away. If you want to wake up to birds and a volcano outline, look farther out. If you want to walk to dinner after a long day of activities, this is the area.

Evítalo si you want a pool with a volcano view at breakfast. The volcano road is closer to that.

Stay in town if you want to walk to dinner after a long day of activities.

The volcano road leads out of town toward Arenal Volcano National Park and the hot-spring developments. Lodges and resorts line it, set in gardens with forest behind. On a clear morning the cone appears above the trees, and that is the picture most visitors have in mind when they search for a room here.

This is the area for guests who mainly want to rest. Many lodges have their own pools, some with warm water, and the tourism board describes the hot waters of the area as mineral-rich and among the most visited sites in the country. The distance to town is short by car but long on foot, so dinner depends on the lodge restaurant or a taxi. If you choose a lodge with a good kitchen, that is no hardship; if not, taxi fares add up over three nights.

Booking tips: ask whether the room faces the volcano, whether the hot water is in the room or in a shared pool, and how late the restaurant serves. Check the cancellation terms too, since rain can change an outdoor plan but not the booking.

Evítalo si you want to walk to restaurants and tour offices, or you are traveling on a tight budget.

3. Waterfall road

Best for
Families, slower stays

The waterfall road heads south from town toward the La Fortuna Waterfall, which the tourism board describes as 70 m high with pools for cooling off. The land here is farms, small lodges and cabins, and the pace is slower than town. Birdsong replaces traffic, and the cost of a room tends to be lower than on the volcano road.

Families like this area for space: cabins with kitchens, grass for children and a short drive to the trailhead. The shortcoming is evenings. Without a car you rely on taxis or the lodge, and the choice of dinner places is smaller. Rain also makes the farm tracks slower, so ask the property how the final access road behaves after a wet afternoon.

This base fits a stay that mixes the waterfall with a rest day, and it is a good second night after two busy nights in town. It is less convenient as the only base for a trip that relies on tour pickups, because some operators may charge more or not collect far from the center; ask before you book.

Evítalo si you plan dinners out every night and do not want to drive or pay for taxis.

A good pick for a second night after two busy ones in town, if you drive.

4. Lake Arenal shore

Best for
Drivers, lake sports

Lake Arenal lies west of the town, and the tourism board describes it as the country's largest artificial lake, ideal for boat tours, kayaking, fishing, windsurfing and stand-up paddling. A base on the shore suits travelers who want those activities in the morning and a quiet evening, and who plan to continue to Monteverde by the road around the lake.

Hotels here are fewer and more spread out, so a car or a prebooked transfer is almost required. Views of the water and the volcano can be spectacular when cloud allows. Wind is a feature of the lake, which is good for sailing and less good for a hammock.

Because services are thin, this base works best as the last night before you leave for Monteverde and Santa Elena or as a calm stop for drivers. It is not the right base for a trip that depends on pickups from town.

Evítalo si you rely on taxis and shuttles for every outing. Town or the volcano road is easier.

For the last night before the road to Monteverde, this shore suits drivers.

Town or volcano road: the real choice

Most readers are choosing between two options, so the rule fits in one place. Pick the town if you have two or three nights, no car and several outings planned, because every tour, shuttle and dinner is easier. Pick the volcano road if the lodge itself is part of the trip and you have a rental car or are happy to pay for taxis. Pick the waterfall road or the lake shore only when you drive and want a slow week.

Think in evenings, not in days. By day, many tours collect you wherever you stay, within limits. In the evening you are alone with the options around your door. A town hotel gives dozens of choices on foot. A lodge up the volcano road gives one restaurant and a taxi number. If you like to wander, the town wins. If you like to eat once and sit in a hot pool, the lodge wins.

The cost works against the lodge. A volcano-road room can cost far more than a similar room in town, and taxi trips add to it. A good compromise for a three-night stay is two nights in town and the last night on the volcano road, so you meet the town first, see the park, and finish with a soak and a quiet morning. The La Fortuna hot springs comparison helps decide whether a hotel with springs is worth it or a day pass is enough, and La Fortuna in 3 days shows how a day-by-day plan fits each base.

Property types and what they include

Hostels and simple cabinas sit mostly in town and suit solo travelers and budget trips. Mid-range hotels in town add private bathrooms, air conditioning or fans and often breakfast. Eco-lodges and boutique lodges concentrate along the volcano road and the waterfall road, with gardens, small pools and quiet. Hot-spring resorts bundle access to the springs, and some sell room-and-pass packages. Apartments and houses fit families and long stays.

Read the listing for what is actually included. Breakfast, shuttle times, pool temperature and activity credit vary by property, and "hot spring" in a room name can mean a private warm tub or a large shared complex. Ask whether a hot-spring pass is included for guests, and whether it is valid on the day you plan to use it. If you will use only one evening of the springs, a day pass on a town stay often costs less than paying for a springs hotel for every night.

When to book

Costa Rica's tourism board gives the Northern Plains dry season as December to April and the green season as May to November. The dry months and the holiday weeks of Christmas, New Year and Easter are the busiest, and hotels on the volcano road fill first. Book those weeks early. In the green season, rooms are easier to find and rates are friendlier, and mornings are usually the clearest part of the day. See the best time to visit Costa Rica for how seasons differ across the country.

Think about the continuing route. If you leave for Monteverde the next morning, a base on the lake side shortens the day. If you land late from the airport, a town hotel avoids a rural road in the dark. If you arrive on a weekend, ask about check-in hours, because small lodges may close the office early.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is booking a volcano-road lodge without a plan for dinner. Check the restaurant hours or the taxi cost before paying. The second is booking only one night. A single night in La Fortuna turns the stay into a transfer, and the park, the springs and the waterfall all want daylight. The third is picking a room for the volcano view alone. Cloud covers the summit on many afternoons, so a room with a good pool and a good breakfast will serve you better than a view that may not appear.

The fourth is renting a car for a town stay and then paying to park it. In town, tours and walking cover almost everything, and a car adds a parking question. The fifth is ignoring the road. UK government advice says heavy rain in the rainy season can cause potholes and landslides that block roads, so check conditions before driving on unpaved access roads, and ask your lodge how the last stretch behaves after rain.

The advice comes from the UK government's safety and security page for Costa Rica, which also advises against leaving luggage in a parked car, in view or in the trunk. Leave nothing visible in a rental car, even in a hotel lot, and carry valuables with you on tours.

Before you go

Set up data before you land. An eSIM for Costa Rica gives you maps for the lake road and messages with your shuttle driver from the airport, and a travel insurance policy should cover the activities you plan, including rafting, canyoning and ATV rides, which some policies exclude. For the transfer between regions, read about getting around Costa Rica, and if you are continuing to the cloud forest, the Monteverde guide covers the reserves.

When the base is chosen, the next decision is how to fill the days. La Fortuna in 3 days lays out a sequence for the waterfall, the park and the springs, and the Arenal Volcano National Park guide explains the trails and the view.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the best area to stay in La Fortuna?

La Fortuna town for most first trips, because tours collect there, restaurants are on foot and buses and shuttles stop nearby. The volcano road suits couples who mostly want a pool, a view and nearby hot springs.

Do you need a car if you stay outside La Fortuna town?

On the volcano road you can manage with taxis and tour pickups, though evenings cost more. On the waterfall road and the lake shore a car is the practical choice, because restaurants and tour offices are farther apart.

Is it better to stay in La Fortuna or near Arenal Volcano?

The volcano is about 7 km from town according to Costa Rica's tourism board, so a town base is never far. Staying on the road toward the park gives views and quiet, while town gives choice and walkability.

Should you stay at a hotel with its own hot springs?

Only if soaking is the point of the trip. Many hot springs sell day passes, so a town hotel plus one evening pass is often cheaper and more flexible. Hotel springs shine when you want to soak after dinner and walk back.

When should you book a hotel in La Fortuna?

Early for the dry season from December to April, Christmas and New Year, and Easter week. Green-season stays from May to November are easier to find, and you may get more choice on the volcano road.
