Libya

Libya is a North African country on the Mediterranean, known for Roman and Greek ruins on the coast and desert oases such as Ghadames.

Libya is a large country on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, in the Maghreb. Tripoli, in the west, is the capital and largest city, with over a million people. Most of the country is desert, but most major cities sit along a coastline of about 1,770 km, the longest Mediterranean coast of any African country.

The ancient cities are the main reason to go. Leptis Magna, a Roman city near Tripoli, reached its height in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Sabratha, Cyrene and other Greek and Roman sites along the coast are among the best-preserved in the Mediterranean. Cyrene lies near the Green Mountain, a forested highland in the east. Ghadames is an important desert oasis. Tourism is still underdeveloped, and services are limited. The northern coast has a milder Mediterranean climate, while the interior has very hot summers and cool winters. Check the security situation and entry rules before you plan, because the country has two rival governments and armed groups control parts of it.

Five things to know before Libya

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

Governments including the UK and US advise against all travel to all or large parts of Libya. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Arrange a visa through an embassy

Visitors need a visa before travel. Because of the political situation, visas issued abroad may not be recognized at every entry point.

  3. Check your passport for Israel stamps

A passport showing previous travel to Israel will not be accepted for travel to Libya.

  4. Register with the police within a week

Visitors must register with the police within one week of arrival. Sponsoring companies usually arrange it.

  5. Bring cash; cards do not work

Foreign bank cards do not work at ATMs or banks, and currency exchange is tightly restricted. Declare cash above $10,000 on arrival.
