Tripoli is the capital of Libya and its largest city, on the Mediterranean coast in the northwest. Its old town, the medina, is a tight network of lanes with the Red Castle on its edge, and the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, a second-century Roman monument, is nearby. Sabratha and Leptis Magna, two large Roman sites, lie to the west and east of the capital. Sabratha is about 70 km west and Leptis Magna about 120 km east.

Tripoli suits a trip built around a city stay, Roman ruins and time on the coast. Spend a day or two walking the old town, then add a day trip to Sabratha or Leptis Magna. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, since summer heat is strong on the coast. The UK and US governments advise against travel to Libya, so check your government's current advice before you book anything.
