Tunisia is a country in North Africa's Maghreb region, bordered by Algeria to the west and Libya to the southeast, with Mediterranean coasts to the north and east. Tunis, on the northeastern coast, is the capital and largest city. Standard Arabic is the official language, but most people speak Tunisian Arabic, called Tounsi. French has no official status yet is widely used in schools, the press and business, and shop signs, menus and road signs are usually in Arabic and French. Islam is the state religion, and about 98% of people are Muslim.
Carthage was a Phoenician settlement that became a major Mediterranean power before the Romans defeated it in 146 BC. Its archaeological site, with remains from the 9th century BC onward, is one of the main attractions near Tunis. The Amphitheatre of El Jem is a major Roman monument, and the Great Mosque of Kairouan, built in 670, is among the most important mosques in the Muslim West. The north has a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, where temperatures can exceed 40°C in July and August. The south is desert that merges into the Sahara.
Five things to know before Tunisia
- Check your visa-free stay
UK citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days, and the passport must be valid for the whole stay. Other passports differ, so check the rule for yours with the Tunisian consulate in your country.
- Change money officially and keep receipts
The dinar cannot be taken out of Tunisia. Declare foreign currency on arrival if required and keep exchange receipts to change dinars back when you leave. UK entry rules
- Leave the drone at home
Drones brought in without authorization are confiscated at the airport and held until you leave.
- Check the advice for border areas
The UK advises against all or all but essential travel to some areas near the Algerian and Libyan borders, including Chaambi Mountains National Park. Most visitor routes are outside them. UK travel advice
- Plan around Ramadan hours
During Ramadan many cafes and restaurants close by day outside tourist areas, and opening hours shorten. The dates move earlier each year.

Tunisia FAQ
Do I need a visa for Tunisia?
Not for UK citizens, who can stay up to 90 days with a passport valid for the whole stay. Other passports differ, so check with the Tunisian consulate in your country.
When is the best time to visit Tunisia?
April, May, September and October are warm without the summer heat. June to August suits the beaches; the desert is best from October to April.

No. The dinar is a closed currency, so change what you have left before departure and keep your exchange receipts.
Is Tunisia safe to visit?
The main visitor areas are outside the zones under UK travel advice, which lie near the Algerian and Libyan borders. Check the current advice if you plan to travel in the south or west.
How many days do I need in Tunisia?
