Hammamet is a resort town on the Gulf of Hammamet, on the Cap Bon peninsula in northeastern Tunisia, about 60 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tunis. It has two parts. One is a walled old medina with narrow streets, white and blue houses and a kasbah. The other is a newer beach zone of hotels, cafes and a marina at Yasmine Hammamet. The medina and the sea front are within a short walk of each other.
Late spring to early autumn is the season for swimming, when the sea is warmest and the beach is busiest. Spring and autumn are cooler and better for walking the medina. A stay of three to four days covers the old town and a few beach days. A day trip to Tunis adds a second city, and Nabeul, a short drive north, suits a half day for its pottery.
Hammamet in five
- Carry dinars for markets and taxisThe Tunisian dinar (TND) is the local currency. Cash is useful in medina shops and for taxis, so change some money at a bank or exchange office before you walk into the old town.Money and costs
- Get a local SIM or eSIM before the medinaThe medina lanes are narrow and twist back on themselves, so offline maps save time. Set up data before you walk in.Phones and eSIM
- Agree the price before you buy in the souksPrices in the medina shops are open to haggling. Ask the price, offer less, and walk away if the seller will not come down.
- Take a louage for the short tripsLouages are shared minibuses that leave when full and run between towns, including Nabeul. Ask the driver the fare before you get in.Getting around
- Choose a base in the medina or on the coastThe medina is a walled old town by the sea. Beach hotels in the Yasmine Hammamet zone to the north are a taxi ride away, so pick by what you plan to do each day.Where to stay

Before you go to Hammamet
Rules for Hammamet, checked
- Check entry rules before you book. Many passports enter Tunisia visa-free for short stays, but confirm your nationality with the Tunisian embassy or consulate.
- Tunisia limits how much Tunisian dinar you can bring in or take out. Check the current limit with Tunisian customs before you travel.
- Ask before you photograph police, soldiers or official buildings. Taking photos of them can lead to trouble with the authorities.
- Ask before you enter a mosque. Many do not admit non-Muslim visitors, and you should dress modestly in any case.

Is Hammamet worth visiting?
Yes for beach time, a walled old town by the sea and short trips to Nabeul and Tunis. Winter is quiet, and in summer the beaches and hotels are busy.
How do you get to Hammamet from Tunis?
By car or by louage, the shared minibus. Traffic near Tunis can slow both, so allow extra time, especially at the start of the trip.
Is Hammamet good for a day trip from Tunis?
It works for a day, but the medina and the beach are better with a night's stay. Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours each way by car.
How many days do you need in Hammamet?
Two nights cover the medina, a beach day and one trip to Nabeul. One night is enough for a quick look at the old town.
When is the best time to visit Hammamet?
April to May and September to October, when it is warm without the summer crowds. Summer is hot and busy, and winter is cool with rain.
Is Hammamet or Nabeul better?
Hammamet suits beach stays and an old town by the sea. Nabeul is a smaller market town known for pottery, so pick it for craft shopping.
