Benghazi is a port city on the Mediterranean coast of eastern Libya, on the Gulf of Sidra in the region of Cyrenaica. It is the second-largest city in Libya after Tripoli. Greek settlers founded it as Berenice, and Roman and later Islamic rulers followed. The Corniche, the seafront road, is the easiest area for an evening walk.
Many travelers use Benghazi as a base for the wider region rather than as a destination on its own. The Greek city of Cyrene, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies to the east and is the main reason to visit this part of the country. Libya requires most visitors to hold a visa, and conditions change, so check current government travel advice and visa rules before you book. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons on the coast.
