Leptis Magna is a Roman city on Libya's Mediterranean coast, east of Tripoli. It began as a Phoenician trading post and grew into a major Roman port. Its best-known son, emperor Septimius Severus, was born there in 145 and rebuilt much of the center in the early 200s. Many of the monuments you see today date from his reign.

The site is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in North Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main ruins include the Severan Forum, the arch of Septimius Severus, the theater, the amphitheater, the market and the harbor area. It suits visitors interested in archaeology who want to walk the ruins at their own pace. Plan a half day to a full day. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, because the open ruins give little shade in summer heat.
