Iran

Iran is a large country in West Asia, home to the ruins of Persepolis, historic cities such as Isfahan, and mountain and desert scenery.

Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a large country in West Asia that was long known abroad as Persia. Tehran is the capital and main economic center. The country has 31 provinces and covers about 1.65 million square kilometers. Persian is the official language, and many Iranians also speak Azerbaijani Turkish, Kurdish or Arabic, so customs can change from one province to the next.

Visitors come for ancient sites and historic cities. Persepolis, the Achaemenid ceremonial center where Darius the Great began a major building program, is among the country's best-known ruins. Susa, one of the world's oldest cities, was an early Achaemenid capital. Isfahan is known for its Persian architecture. The country's terrain runs from Mount Damavand, at 5,610 meters the highest point in Iran, to the Kavir Desert and the Caspian forests. Interior summers can reach 38 °C, while the Caspian north is wet. Since 28 February 2026 Iran has been at war with the United States and Israel, so check current conditions before you book.

Five things to know before Iran

  1. Read the current travel advisory first

The UK advises against all travel to Iran (page updated 13 August 2026) and Canada advises avoiding all travel. Most travel insurance will not cover you where your government advises against travel. UK travel advice

  2. Check the risk of detention for your passport

The UK warns that British and British-Iranian nationals are at significant risk of arrest and detention. Iran does not recognize dual nationality, so dual nationals are treated as Iranian.

  3. Get a visa before you travel

Almost all visitors need a visa. The UK says British citizens must apply as part of an organized tour or with a sponsor in Iran, and processing can be slow and unpredictable. Tehran visa and entry

  4. Plan your cash before you go

Non-Iranian debit and cash cards will not work, getting cash is extremely difficult and street money changing is illegal. Work out how you will get rials legally first. Money and phones

  5. Follow the dress code in public

In public places women must wear a headscarf, trousers or a floor-length skirt, and a long-sleeved tunic or coat to mid-thigh or knee. Alcohol is illegal. Dress and conduct rules
