Azerbaijan

Baku's walled old city and seafront, the fire sites on the Absheron Peninsula, and the Greater Caucasus mountains to the north.

Azerbaijan is a country in the South Caucasus, on the Caspian Sea, and Baku is its capital. The Walled City holds the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, and Baku Boulevard runs along the sea, good for an evening walk. Modern landmarks include the Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center. Outside Baku, Yanar Dag is a natural gas fire burning on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula, and Qobustan has rock carvings, some dated to about 15,000 years ago.

The Greater Caucasus rises to the north, and Mount Bazardüzü, at 4,466 metres, is the country's highest peak. The central and eastern plains have hot, dry summers with highs up to 43 °C, so spring and autumn are the easier months for sightseeing. Baku's airport is about 20 km north-east of the city, and two motorways built in 2008 and 2009 link it to the centre. A short trip can cover Baku and the nearby sites, while a longer stay leaves time for the mountains beyond the capital.

Five things to know before Azerbaijan

  1. Read the FCDO advice first

FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of the Armenia border (Nakhchivan excepted) and all but essential travel to 12 south-western districts, including Shusha. Entering some areas without permission is illegal. UK travel advice

  2. Get the e-visa at least 3 working days ahead

The official portal charges $20 plus a $9 service fee for a single-entry e-visa, issued within 3 working days (urgent: 3 hours). It is valid 90 days with 30 days to stay; print it and carry it. Visa checker

  3. Plan to fly in

FCDO says only air entry is without restrictions; the Georgia and Iran land borders are temporarily closed. Germany says the Baku to Tbilisi train, open since 26 May 2026, is for nationals needing no visa. Entry requirements

  4. Base yourself in Baku

The capital has the airport, the Old City and the Boulevard, and Gobustan is a day trip. The Baku guide compares the four bases, lays out three days and weighs the trips out of town. Baku

  5. Carry your passport and register long stays

Police sometimes check identity documents, so carry your passport. Foreigners staying over 15 days must register with the State Migration Service; hotels often do it, but renters must do it themselves.

Azerbaijan FAQ

Which passports need a visa for Azerbaijan?

The UK, US, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish governments all say a visa is required, and all six are on the e-visa portal's eligible list. Citizens of Japan, South Korea, Singapore and some Gulf states have a time-limited visa-free scheme of 3 entries a year. Use the visa checker for your passport.

Is Azerbaijan in the EU or Schengen?

No. It is outside both, so Schengen day counts do not apply and its own e-visa decides how long you stay.

What if I overstay the 30 days?

FCDO says you can apply to the State Migration Service to extend at least 3 days before the stay ends. The portal says you can apply for a new e-visa only after leaving the country, and a stay over 15 days must be registered free of charge. An overstay without permission can mean leaving within 48 hours and a fine of 300 to 400 manat, so keep the receipt.

Which areas does the UK advise against?

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Kelbajar, Lachin, Qubadli, Zengilan, Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Khojavand, Shusha, Khojali, Khankendi, Aghdam and Tartar, and against all travel within 5 km of the Armenia border. Follow FCDO and do not plan trips to these districts.

How do other governments rate the risk?

Canada says exercise a high degree of caution, citing terrorism. The US lists Level 3, reconsider travel, citing terrorism, armed conflict, landmines and a threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran. FCDO notes a heightened risk of regional tension and travel disruption.
