Baku is Azerbaijan’s capital and largest city, on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula beside the Caspian Sea. Its UNESCO-listed Old City, Icheri Sheher, has the Maiden Tower, the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, narrow cobbled lanes, mosques, old baths and caravanserais. Beyond the walls, the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre and Flame Towers show a different side of the city. Baku Boulevard follows the waterfront, with an amusement park, yacht club and musical fountain.

Plan time for the city’s museums, including the National Art Museum of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum. Gobustan, near Baku, has Roman inscriptions dating from AD 84 to 96. On the Absheron Peninsula, Ateshgah was built by Indian traders in the 17th and 18th centuries, and Yanar Dag is a natural gas flame. Baku has hot summers, cool winters and strong winds throughout the year. Local sources describe autumn as mild and dry. Allow about three days for the city, plus extra time for trips outside it.
