Armenia

Armenia is a mountainous country of ancient monasteries, fast rivers and high lakes, and Yerevan is a practical base for trips out.

Armenia is a landlocked country in the South Caucasus, bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran. Its capital, Yerevan, is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, and most visitors arrive there by air at Zvartnots International Airport. Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity as its official religion, in 301, and many medieval churches still stand across the country. Haghpat and Sanahin, two monastery complexes, are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The country is mostly mountainous, with about three-quarters of its land between 1,000 and 2,500 meters above sea level. Lake Sevan, at about 1,900 meters, is among the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. Summers run from June to mid-September and are hot and dry, around 22 to 36°C, while autumn brings long, colorful foliage. Land borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan have been under a severe blockade, so check the current situation before you plan any overland route. A week gives time for Yerevan and a few day trips.

Five things to know before Armenia

  1. Check the visa rule for your passport

US, UK, Australian, German, Spanish and other EU citizens are visa-free up to 180 days a year. Canadians need an e-visa: USD 8 (up to 21 days) or USD 39 (up to 120 days), processed in up to 3 working days. Visa checker

  2. Keep away from the Azerbaijan border area

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel within 5 km of the Azerbaijan border and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The US rates the border region Level 4: Do Not Travel. UK travel advice

  3. Base in Yerevan and fan out

Most first trips sleep in the capital and use it for Garni, Geghard, Etchmiadzin and Lake Sevan. The Yerevan guide compares four bases and the day trips. Yerevan travel guide

  4. Take extra care on the roads

The UK Foreign Office calls the standard of driving poor and roads poor from November to February, and advises avoiding driving outside towns after dark. Getting around

  5. Plan Georgia overland, not Türkiye or Azerbaijan

The land borders with Türkiye and Azerbaijan are closed, so the practical overland neighbor is Georgia, linked by a night train from Yerevan to Tbilisi. Check the current timetable on the railway's site. Tbilisi travel guide

Armenia FAQ

Do I need a visa for Armenia?

Not with a US, UK, Australian, German or Spanish passport: the foreign ministry's visa-free list allows up to 180 days a year. Canada is not on that list, so Canadians apply before departure; the e-visa site lists a USD 8 fee for up to 21 days or USD 39 for up to 120 days, with processing of up to 3 working days. Check your passport in the visa checker.

Is Armenia in the EU or Schengen?

No. It is outside both, so its days do not use up a Schengen allowance and you pass Armenian passport control on arrival.

Is Armenia safe to visit?

Most visitors stay in Yerevan and the central regions. The UK Foreign Office describes crime as low, with occasional pickpocketing, while the US advisory is Level 2, with the Azerbaijan border region at Level 4. Stay out of the areas both governments name.

How many days do I need in Armenia?

Five to seven days cover Yerevan, Garni and Geghard, Lake Sevan and Dilijan. Add two or three days for the south if you can drive or hire a driver.

When is the best time to visit Armenia?

May, June, September and October. July and August are very hot in Yerevan, and winter brings snow and cold to the mountain roads.
