Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia, in the South Caucasus. The Hrazdan River runs through a canyon that splits the city in two. The centre lies low, and the upper districts climb the slopes around it. Mount Ararat, the country's main symbol, can be seen from almost anywhere in the capital, so it is an easy point to get your bearings. The city's origins go back to Erebuni, an Urartian fortress founded in 782 BC, and Yerevan has been Armenia's capital since 1918.

The main sights cluster around Republic Square, the Cascade staircase and the Matenadaran, a library and research centre holding about 17,000 ancient manuscripts. The Tsitsernakaberd memorial to the victims of the Armenian genocide sits on a hill above the gorge. Artisan goods are sold at the Vernissage open-air market on Aram Street. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, because summers are hot and dry and winters are cold.

Yerevan FAQ

How many days do you need in Yerevan?

Three days cover Republic Square, the Cascade, the Matenadaran, Erebuni and a Garni and Geghard day trip. Two days work if you skip the day trip. Add one or two days for Etchmiadzin, Lake Sevan or Khor Virap.

Is Yerevan safe for tourists?

FCDO describes crime levels in Armenia as low, with occasional pickpocketing and bag-snatching, and says protests sometimes take place in central Yerevan. Its border warnings concern the Azerbaijan border area and the M16/H26 road, not the capital.

How do you get from Zvartnots airport to central Yerevan?

The Armenia Tourism Committee lists Airport Express minibus 201 every half hour from 7:00 to 22:00, plus taxis, ridesharing and rental cars. FCDO advises using an app such as GG instead of hailing a taxi in the street.

Do you need a visa for Yerevan?

Not with a US, UK, Australian or EU passport, which the foreign ministry's list covers for up to 180 days a year. Canada is not on that list: the e-visa site lists USD 8 for a visitor visa of up to 21 days and USD 39 for up to 120 days, processed in up to 3 working days. The Armenia guide and the visa checker cover each passport.

Can you take a train from Yerevan to Tbilisi?

Yes. A night train, number 372, runs from Yerevan to Tbilisi on even-numbered dates this season, arriving in the morning. The Tbilisi guide covers what to do on arrival.
