Tehran is Iran's capital and largest city, on the southern foothills of the Alborz mountains. About 9 million people live in the city and about 16.8 million in the wider metro area, the largest in the Middle East. It is the country's economic center and home to most national ministries and parliament. Visitors come for Golestan Palace, a Qajar-era royal complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Iranian Imperial Crown Jewels at the National Jewelry Museum, and the Grand Bazaar in the city center.

Plan a few days for palaces, museums and bazaars, and add a winter day at a ski resort one to three hours away. The north of the city is cooler and closer to the mountains, while the south is flatter, hotter and lower. Summers are long and dry, with highs often above 35°C. January highs run about 7 to 9°C, and most rain falls from November to May. Check current conditions before you travel. Tehran was hit by Israeli airstrikes in June 2025, and oil depots near the city were struck in March 2026, after which residents were told to stay indoors.

Tehran FAQ

Is it safe to travel to Tehran right now?

The UK and Canada advise against all travel to Iran. The UK warns of a very high risk of arrest and detention for British nationals, and Canada says to leave if you can do so safely. Read both pages and your insurer's terms before any planning.

Do I need a visa for Tehran?

Yes. The UK says everyone except Iranian passport holders needs one, and British citizens must apply through an organized tour or a sponsor in Iran. Passport rules and processing are slow and unpredictable, so ask the Iranian embassy.

Can I use my bank card in Tehran?

No. The UK says non-Iranian debit and cash cards will not work and that changing money on the street is illegal. Euros and US dollars are more commonly accepted than pounds, and you need a legal way to get rials.

Will mobile data and the internet work?

Not reliably. The UK says authorities have blocked, slowed or shut down landline, internet and mobile services without warning, and advises keeping another means of communication and navigation. Many Western streaming services are banned.

Will my travel insurance cover Iran?

Probably not. The UK says insurance could be invalidated if you travel against FCDO advice. Get written confirmation of medical and evacuation cover before relying on any policy.
