Aegina is an island in Greece, in the Saronic Gulf and the Islands regional unit of Attica, about 27 km from Athens. Its main town and port, also called Aegina, sits at the northwest end of the island. Hydrofoil ferries from Piraeus take about 40 minutes, and the regular car ferry takes about an hour. The island was the temporary first capital of modern Greece from 1827 until 1829.
The best-known sight is the Temple of Aphaia, dating from about 490 BC and considered the oldest surviving temple in Greece. Pistachios are the crop most associated with the island, and Aegina pistachios have Protected Designation of Origin status. Many Athenians own second homes here, so summer is the busiest season. Plan a day for the temple, the town and a beach, or stay overnight to walk the marked paths at a slower pace.
Aegina in five
- Take the fast boat from Piraeus for a day tripFast boats cross in about 40 minutes and conventional ferries in roughly an hour or more. Book a seat on the return boat in summer, and check the last sailing before a long lunch.Piraeus
- Visit the Temple of Aphaia early or lateThe ancient temple stands on a pine-covered hill above the sea. Take the bus or a taxi from Aegina Town; check the site's current hours before you go, since they change by season.
- Rent a scooter or bike only if you rideTraffic is light, but hills and shared roads suit confident riders. Otherwise the local bus links the town with Agia Marina and Perdika, and taxis fill the gaps.
- Eat pistachios and seafood on the harborAegina is known for its pistachios, sold in the town's shops and used in sweets. Tavernas along the harbor serve fresh fish, so order by weight and ask the price first.
- Add Hydra or Agistri for a second dayWater taxis and ferries connect to nearby Agistri, and Hydra lies beyond. Check the summer timetable if you want to hop between them.Hydra

Is Aegina worth visiting from Athens?
Yes, as a half or full day. You get a classical temple, a pretty harbor and a swim, without a long ferry ride. Stay a night if you want empty streets in the early morning and evening.
How long does the ferry to Aegina take?
About 40 minutes by fast boat and around an hour or more by conventional ferry from Piraeus. Check the operators' schedules for your date, since services change by season.
Can you see Aegina in one day?
Yes: arrive by morning boat, visit the Temple of Aphaia, eat at the harbor and swim at Agia Marina or Perdika. The return boat leaves by early evening, so check the time.
What is Aegina famous for?
Pistachios, the Temple of Aphaia and a harbor of fish tavernas. It was also briefly Greece's first capital in the early 1800s, which explains its neoclassical buildings.
Aegina or Hydra: which is better for a day trip?
Aegina is closer, easier and cheaper, with a temple and beaches. Hydra is more scenic, car-free and further. Choose Aegina for a short trip and Hydra for a stay with an overnight.
